Vivier Circular Route and the Blanot Caves

A lovely walk, starting from a well-preserved village with a unique heritage.
Here, nothing comes without a bit of effort. You always have to go up before you can come down. But if you give it a go, your steps will take you through the vineyards to the Blanot caves, a protected site which, in winter, is home to small colonies of common pipistrelles and lesser and greater horseshoe bats – species that play a major role in the site’s reputation. The return journey will take you through the shade of the woods.

Description of the walk

Park in the small village car park, near L’Étape.

(S/E) Head towards the wash house and take the first dirt track on the left. At the end, turn left and continue straight on until you reach the war memorial. Then turn right for 100 metres before taking the Chemin de Mazelet on the left towards the hamlet of Fougnières (blue markings on a white background).

(1) As you approach the hamlet, go down the road to the left, then turn right onto Rue aux Loups, which leads to the car park for the Blanot Caves. At the car park, turn left and walk down the path to the caves.

(2) At the entrance to the caves, go down the ramp on the left and follow the path. At the bottom, turn left onto the path leading downhill.

(3) At the crossroads, head straight ahead (west) towards Vivier until you reach a junction with a road. Follow this road down to the right, ignore the track on the left and continue straight on until you reach the D146. Turn right onto the D146, then immediately turn left onto the steep path leading to the wash house (1849).
Follow the path uphill to “Beau Cul”, a former vantage point for admirers of the washerwomen.

(4) Turn right onto the grassy path. Take the next path on the left and head up the hill. At the top, turn right towards “Échats Loups”.

(5) Turn left to reach the ridge at the junction with the Bois de la Roche. Turn left towards Blanot.

(6) At the next ‘Bois de la Roche’ signpost, head down to the left to return to the starting point of this walk (S/E).

Notes

In summer, the caves are open to visitors. The temperature inside is 13°C.
There is also a refreshment stand on the esplanade.

Public toilets are available in the village car park in Blanot, at the start and finish of this walk.

Food and accommodation are available locally.

If you have a bit of extra energy, you can take the ‘bat trail’ and explore the village further.

Worth a visit

The caves are on the route.

A stroll through the village allows you to discover Merovingian tombs, the Romanesque Church of Saint-Martin, and the “Prieuré” – a well-preserved village that is not a museum, yet feels both timeless and of the present.

A short detour to the orientation point at Mont Saint-Romain, the region’s highest peak, can round off your visit to this area.

(S/E) “La Thébaïde” in Blanot, a restaurant and guesthouse.

A lovely walk, relatively easy, but with some fairly steep climbs at times. It’s best to be out of breath.

Hello,
I’m glad you were able to complete this short route without any problems.
Just so I’m in the loop, could you let me know where the yellow markings are mentioned? I can’t see them, and if anything needs correcting, this information would be very helpful.
Thank you in advance for your reply.

A good route. One small issue: the start point isn’t clearly signposted. The signs are blue, whereas it’s marked as yellow on the map we downloaded
It doesn’t matter though, as we enjoyed the route
