Circular route from village to village west of Cormatin

To the west of Cormatin, in the heart of the Ban Sacré, this walk may occasionally involve getting your feet wet during heavy rain, but above all it offers the chance to discover some of the most beautiful Cluniac sites.

Description of the walk

Park at Place de l’Église. Cormatin is accessible via route 701 on the Mobigo regional bus network (Timetables).

(S/E) With your back to the church, take the Grande Rue downhill to the left. Walk past the entrance to the castle, then turn left onto the Route de Chissey and walk past the town hall. Continue along Rue de l'Ermitage, which leads to Chazelle.

(1) At the end of the tarmac road, take the path on the left, rejoin the tarmac at Les Châtelards and head straight on to Chazelle. You’ll reach the Place du Doyenné and the church.

(2) Head down Rue de l'Église to the right to reach Route de Chazeux. Turn right onto it: here you’ll find a 17th-century wash house and a mill on the Grosne. Continue on to reach the D981.

(3) Cross it carefully, then first turn right then left to cross the Voie Verte and go up the path opposite to reach Ameugny via Rue Borne.

(4) Take Route du Haut on the left, then Rue du Verger on the right, which passes in front of the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. Continue along Impasse du Chat to reach Rue des Vignerons, turn left then right to go down Rue Pentue.

(5) Take Rue des Raclos on the left, which becomes Rue des Gillettes. Pass a large house on your right.

(6) Turn right onto Chemin de la Grange Sercy until you reach the hamlet.

(7) Turn right at the junction. Stay on this path until the T-junction, then continue right towards Confrançon.

(8) Arrive at Rue des Mûriers and turn right onto it. Cross the square on the left to join Rue du Bois Dernier (D14) and follow it to the left.

(9) Turn right off this road before it climbs over the railway line to follow Chemin de la Prairie. Continue along the Guye, passing a house on your left, and walk for about 400 m.

(10) Turn left and cross the Guye at the Gué d'Aynard. It may be a good idea to wear clothes that can be rolled up and to have a spare pair of socks. Follow Rue de Aynard, keeping the farm buildings on your right.

(11) Cross the D127 (Route de Chassignolles) with care, take Rue du Doyenné opposite, following the GR®76, and reach the hamlet of Saint-Hippolyte.

(12) Turn right onto Rue des Signeux (GR®76B). You’ll come out onto the D127 opposite Château de Chassignoles; turn left onto it and continue to the crossroads.

(13) Turn right towards Besseuil, cross the ford over the Guye and then the bridge over the Grosne to reach the first houses of Cortemblein.

(14) Leave the GR® at Place du Quart Jacob and take Chemin du Moulin Neuf on the right. Join the Greenway, follow it to the right and cross the Grosne again.

(15) About fifty metres further on, turn left onto Rue de la Sablerie. Cross the bridge over the Grosne, take Rue de la Filatière on the right and join Grande Rue. Follow it to the right to reach the starting point of this walk, Place de l’Église (S/E).

A really lovely walk. (Best avoided in hot weather, but during the hunting season, there’s no problem…)
The beauty of the Romanesque churches is unrivalled: you’ll want to see more!

A pleasant walk. One downside, however: crossing the ford requires more than just an extra pair of socks. Make sure you bring a second pair of shoes, as there’s 60 cm of water to wade through between some of the stones in the ford.
