Vigoulet–Auzil circular loop

A lovely walk around the village of Vigoulet-Auzil, between the Ruisseau du Pont d’Auzil and the Ruisseau du Réganel.
Perfect for enjoying on your own or with the family, on foot or while running, in any season, and especially in summer, to enjoy the cool, damp atmosphere of the forest.

Description of the walk

Park in one of the car parks provided on Avenue du Souleilla or Avenue des Coteaux, and make your way to the junction of Bordeneuve and Allée du Parc, near the tennis club. Parking in front of the town hall is prohibited.

(S/E) Start the walk along Bordeneuve, heading towards the Vigoulet-Auzil Equestrian Club

(1) Pass the entrance to the Equestrian Club on your left and head into the woods. Follow the yellow markings.

(2) Follow the GPS track closely and ignore the OSM route to navigate this hairpin bend.

(3) Cross the Ruisseau du Pont d’Auzil, turn left along the stream, and continue to the next junction.

(4) Turn left and head straight up, southwards, ignoring the cross-shaped marker, until you emerge from the forest. Head up through the Allée des Bois housing estate (either to the right or left – it doesn’t matter).

(5) Two options:
- Turn immediately right.
- Turn left, following the suggested route, and visit Vigoulet-Auzil Castle and its surroundings.

(6) Turn back.

(5) Continue straight ahead and, taking care, follow the route along the Chemin d’Auzil.

(7) Turn left onto Avenue de Val d’Auzil. Follow it carefully for about a hundred metres, then turn right onto Chemin du Courdela, after the housing estate.

This section is very exposed to the sun and leads to a very steep slope, signposted a little further on. Take care in wet weather. You’ll come out onto Avenue des Pyrénées at a junction.

(8) Cross it carefully and head towards the Ruisseau du Réganel. Follow the stream for just under 2 km.

(9) Turn left just before the Placette du Grand Bois, enter the woods and go round the lake on the left. The path leads onto a steep slope. Follow the GPS track closely, or switch to the OSM map to stay on course.

(10) Turn right, then left at the junction, and keep slightly to the left at the end of the clearing. Walk up a slightly steep slope, which has been eroded by the rain. Leave the woods and join Avenue Souleilla.

(11) Carefully cross the roundabout on the left to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

This walk is classified as‘moderate’ because, in wet weather, certain sloping sections require extra care and caution to avoid slipping.

In ‘dry’ weather (the ground is never really dry, especially in the forest, and even in the height of summer), the difficulty of the walk drops to‘easy’.

Worth a visit

A few places to visit:

  • The Vigoulet-Auzil Equestrian Club, accessible right at the start of the walk.
  • The Restaurant des Coteaux in Vigoulet-Auzil, next to the town hall, behind the tennis courts. See opening hours.
  • The area around Vigoulet Castle, a stop on the walk.

A lovely walk to do in dry weather. Mostly along a path through the woodland, with a short stretch along the road through the village of Auzil. It’s easy to follow the route using GPS and the description. At the start, you can simply follow the obvious path to point 3 or 4 without worrying, as the routes join up. Between points 7 and 8, at the summit, there are magnificent views across the countryside. The climb from 9 to 11 is a bit steep and, above all, very rutted. Best avoided after rain. Thank you for this route.

A very pleasant, undulating route through beautiful, unspoilt woodland, past lovely old and contemporary houses, with stunning views. There are a few steep sections, but these are clearly indicated in the route description

There are many different types of signposts, so you can only rely on the description of the hike provided by Visorando. The description of the hike on paper is insufficient and we made several mistakes. Fortunately, the tracking on our smartphones alerted us to these mistakes and allowed us to get back on the right track each time. In summary, rely on your GPS and not on the paper itinerary.

As I’m currently there, I completed this circular walk during the ‘winter’ season and after it had rained.
Best avoided!
Quite a few muddy sections, particularly at the start of the ‘forest’ section, from the ‘Equestrian Centre’, with paths ‘ploughed up’ by horses.
And when it’s going downhill and it’s slippery, you fall!
Well, nothing serious, but I must admit it wasn’t exactly a walk in the park the whole way through.
I can therefore confirm the various recommendations on this matter: do this route in dry weather!
JMZ.

A lovely walk on the outskirts of Toulouse, best enjoyed in dry weather: the ground can be slippery in the woodland when it’s wet
