Circular route from the Tête du Torraz starting from Sciozier

A lovely, easy circular route – apart from the climb – offering a 360° panorama of the Val d'Arly and the Aravis range.

Description of the walk

The start is between Praz-sur-Arly and Flumet. From the D1212, take the road heading north towards Le Parchet / La Touvière. Drive right to the top of the hamlet of Sciozier, up to the Fork in the road. There are few parking spaces here, but you can turn left and find a place to park at the start point (10) of the hike.

(S/E) Start the walk by heading uphill along the track to the right at the Fork in the road (north-north-east).

(1) Continue straight on. If you’re in a hurry, you can take a steep shortcut to the left.

(2) Stay on the track where the path forms a hollow. After crossing a stream, the climb resumes.

(3) Turn left shortly afterwards, staying on the track.

(4) Behind the Plan de l'Aar farm, find a path that climbs up the slope; this is the steepest section of the route.

(5) When you reach the ridge, turn left and head for the summit of Tête du Torraz, which is clearly visible.

(6) After enjoying the 360° view, continue straight on towards the south-west and begin the descent. Ignore the paths branching off to the side (these are, however, viable detours).

(7) At the fork in the path, ignore the two paths on the left. Look for a track that climbs south-east. A sign saying “Falaises” warns you, but there is no risk of vertigo or any real danger (however, keep a close eye on children and dogs). This section can be avoided entirely by continuing along the track.

(8) Lovely view over the Val d'Arly. Carry on and rejoin the track.

(9) Continue left along the track towards “Gâteau”. Alternative car park for the start of the hike.

(10) Continue left along the track, which takes a hairpin bend to the left (east) and leads back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

No difficulty other than the elevation gain. Plenty of picnic tables at the top.
There is a section near a cliff, but the path remains at a safe distance (no risk of vertigo, but keep a close eye on young children and dogs).
Only the middle third is exposed to the sun. The rest is mostly shaded.

In high season, the Plan de l’Aar farm (4) offers refreshments and the Sciozier farm, a little further down from the (S/E), offers snacks.

The only downside to this hike is the access to the fork from Sciozier and then on the way back, which is on a stony track... be careful with the bottom of your car
However, at the top of the Torraz, the 360° view is magnificent despite average visibility (lots of high clouds)
In terms of visitor numbers, there is a bivouac camp at the summit and mountain bikers on the descent back down

A superb hike with a magnificent view of Mont Blanc, which was covered in fresh snow, and a surprise on reaching the summit to find a fast-food outlet in a hut! We ate in a deckchair with a 360° view. We set off from La Touvière, so there was an 838-metre climb, but it was a gradual ascent.

A very pleasant walk, with a slope that is challenging enough to make you feel like you are putting in a significant effort. At the top, you can enjoy a drink or sample a platter of local charcuterie at the renowned Foodtruck 1930. A wonderful discovery! Please note, however, that the drive up to Le Sciozier is via a road that may be difficult to navigate if your tyres are slightly worn.
