Description of the walk

Take the Vénéon valley and, 3km before La Bérarde, park in the car park at the exit of the hamlet of Les Étages.

(S/E) Cross back through the hamlet along the D530 road for about 1km. Do not take the Refuge du Soreiller path at the entrance to the hamlet of Les Étages, as this is the path for the descent.

(1) Just after a small bridge, an old wooden post points towards Montagne d’en Bas – Refuge du Soreiller. Take this steep path on the right. The path is marked by cairns and, in places, pink paint marks.

(2) A wooden post indicating that you are heading in the right direction.

(3) A gate to prevent the sheep from escaping. The next section requires care as it is exposed, but the path is well marked.

(4) A rocky section that is not difficult but exposed.

(5) Finally, a flat section where, for thefirst time, you can admire the Dibona. The path curves round a rocky ridge to the left, which once again hides the Dibona.

(6) A small, tricky gully to cross; the path is worn down by rain and sheep. Follow the cairns carefully through the vast scree field of the former Soreiller glacier.

(7) Climb up a small rocky section from where you will see the refuge and the climbers on the Dibona. Follow the green painted arrows.

(8) Arrive at the Soreiller refuge at the foot of the Dibona. Take and follow the steep but easy path that leads to the hamlet of Les Étages just below the refuge. A yellow signpost indicates the direction. Remember to look back regularly to admire the Flèche Dibona.

(9) Admire the view in front of you towards La Bérarde, the Dôme des Neiges des Écrins and the south face of the Écrins. Reach the bottom of the path from the Refuge du Soreiller and return to the car park in the hamlet of Les Étages via the road (S/E).

I’ve made a video featuring the names of the peaks along this stunning route, which shows the route and captures the mountain atmosphere of the Dibona.

The route description accurately reflects the terrain. You do need to be careful and not be afraid of heights to climb up the ascent route described. Overall, this is a hike best avoided in the rain or on soggy ground. The descent via the Soreiller stream is relatively easier, but don’t forget the significant elevation gain. Magnificent views of the Di Bonna and the refuge before the final steep climb. You feel quite small at the foot of the peak. I think this hike is classified as difficult due to the elevation gain and the exposed sections. For those who are a bit apprehensive, it’s a good idea to do the round trip via the Soreiller stream side. Thank you for this lovely hike!!

We didn’t do the full route; we just went up and back along the same path to the Refuge de la Soreiller. A very scenic route, though challenging due to the elevation gain. We enjoyed the views from the top and watching the climbing parties on the Dibona. Superb
Small rockfall and landslide in the gorges; an alternative route is in place. No problem.
