Description of the walk

Suggested departure point from Ceyzérieu, which can be reached from Chazey-Bons, Artemare or Lavours. From the village, head towards Aignoz and park immediately in the large car park above the cemetery.

(S/E) Descend towards Aignoz, going around the cemetery on the right and then following the small road that crosses the first marshes. In Aignoz, continue on to discover the hamlet until you reach the Maison du Marais.

(1) Continue straight on along the Route du Marais, which descends to cross the Séran via an old bridge.

(2) The nature reserve trail starts just after the bridge on the right. It heads eastwards to a crossroads.

(3) Turn right to walk along the marsh to the viewpoint on the pond side.

(4) Retrace your steps and head north to the wet meadow viewpoint.

(5) Return and turn west to visit the wildlife observatory and then the Étang Tendret. The boardwalk then takes you back to the junction where the circular began.

(3) Return to the bridge over the Séran and then to the Maison du Marais

(1) Visit the Maison if you didn't do so on the way there and exit at its north-west corner to take Rue du Grand Champ northwards. It becomes a path then a trail as it approaches the Séran, which you follow along the right bank, with some pretty views and a change of direction to the south-west until you reach a new bend in the Séran.

(6) Leave the Séran flowing northwards and walk along a cultivated field to the south, at the end of which you turn right to join the Route de Culoz, heading north-west, often through tall grass, which you take on the left for 100 m.
Be careful, as there is relatively heavy traffic!

(7) After leaving the road towards Talissieu, turn right onto the road (Montée des Courbettes - PL diversion sign) and immediately turn right onto the small road that climbs westwards.

Leave the houses at En Crattier on your right and continue straight ahead along a path that gradually climbs the Courbettes hill to its plateau, at a crossroads at an altitude of 308 m.

(8) Turn left and follow the track until you reach the junction where the road becomes tarmac.

(9) Turn left to descend this small road which crosses the hamlet of Croulet, cuts across Rue des Écoles to cross the village at Bourbillon, then cuts across Rue de Culoz to reach the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

There are several possible starting points for this circular route: the school car park in Ceyzérieu or the car parks around Aignoz.
This guide was inspired by the publications of Yves RAY, a great connoisseur of the Bugey region.

The section between (1) and (6) along the Séran is markedGR®® 59.

The section between (6) and (7) is not always clearly marked and may be impassable in high water. In this case, at (6) continue to follow theGR®® markings along the Séran to the Culoz road, which you should then follow (carefully) on the left for 500 m to (7).

Worth a visit

The circular tour of the nature reserve on the boardwalk (accessible to people with reduced mobility) is accompanied by information panels explaining the environment. Follow the direction of traffic to avoid crossing paths.

The Maison du Marais is definitely worth a visit to understand the role of this environment and other points of interest in the Bugey.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A very beautiful trail.
Allow time to visit the marsh house (closed for the winter until April 2025) and the walkway on stilts, which requires careful observation.
The forest/stream section is also very beautiful.
Not very busy at this time of year and the marsh area is impassable in heavy rain.

The route through the Lavour marsh is very pretty and very busy on Sundays. Thesecond part is less busy and very pleasant along the stream. The last part is more difficult because of the mud.

Easy hike. The circular through the marsh is very interesting from a zoological (bring your binoculars) and botanical point of view.
The descent offers views of the Bugey, the Épine mountain and the Rhône. The path through the woods along the river is pleasant, especially when it's hot. The return to the village by road is quite warm in the sun...

A pleasant walk that is suitable for children. It takes half an hour to drive there and another half an hour to drive back, but the roads are quiet. Children will love the circular path along the boardwalk. The path along the river is not signposted, so don't forget to take the Visorando app with you.
