The Lac de Barterand circular from Vongnes

An easy route to discover the Bas Bugey. Pass by Lac de Barterand, a small, refreshing lake (fishing and swimming), Marignieu with its wines, honey and an almost 800-year-old chestnut tree, and the nearby Marais de Lavours with its discovery trail. Not forgetting Vongnes, its Bugiste wine cellar and the Ecomuseum on the trades of the vine and wine.

Description of the walk

Car park near the cemetery and a few spaces not reserved for customers opposite the Caveau Bugiste.

This description is in an anti-clockwise direction, but the route can be walked in either direction.

(S/E) Head back down towards the village and immediately turn left onto Chemin de la Patinière (yellow markings).

(1) As you approach Barbillieu, continue right towards the hamlet, then turn left.

(2) As you approach La Pierre, leave the hamlet on your right and continue straight ahead, climbing into the woods to join the Roman road.

(3) Follow it to the left, then negotiate a right-hand bend and continue for a few hundred metres, passing a sort of shelter on the right-hand side of the path.

(4) Shortly afterwards, take a path on the right leading directly to the Notre-Dame de Poirin Chapel.

(5) Continue south until you reach the Roman road, and follow it to the right for about 200 metres.

(6) Take a good path on the left (yellow markings) which climbs into the woods and leads to Marignieu.

(7) Enter the village by turning left. When you reach the oven, climb up Impasse du Puits Pogniot on the left to admire the almost 800-year-old chestnut tree.

(8) Head back down into the village, turn left onto Rue du Four, then right onto Rue des Granges, where you will join the GR®59. Then follow Rue du Lavoir and continue to the junction with Route de Flaxieu (D69c).

(9) Turn left onto this road.

(10) At the edge of the village, admire the miniature houses and take the path on the right that climbs towards a vineyard and then turns left into the woods. Follow the GR®59 to Lac de Barterand.

(11) Turn left to reach the lake shore and admire the sculpted rock. Walk along the north side of the lake and pass in front of the fishermen's house. Cross the D37 with caution to head opposite onto the D37b and reach Lézieu. Turn left onto a small road that leads to the marsh.

(12) Turn left onto Chemin des Chasseurs, which runs alongside the marsh.

(13) Join the small road and continue straight ahead towards Flaxieu.

(14) When you reach the village, take the small road on the left and then quickly turn right to walk alongside a vineyard. Climb towards Flaxieu along a path that winds through the vineyard and head for the church.

(15) Turn right onto Rue de Pommont, then left before the town hall onto Rue de la Sainte Fontaine (D69c), which you will reach quickly.

(16) Go up to the departmental road (D37), which you cross carefully. After the cemetery, turn right onto Chemin Sous le Mont (yellow markings), which climbs into the woods. Steep at first, the path levels out and then descends; don't miss the orientation table on the right and the viewpoint over the Marais de Lavours and the surrounding area.

(17) Retrace your steps and rejoin the route by turning right. Find the GR®59 and follow it to the right to return to the car park (S/E).

The points indicated are not on the map route, such as the large chestnut tree and other small features of this kind.
The ONF is working on the Bredannaz trail, clearing timber, so it was impossible to take the upper track. We had to go through the woods, which was very steep...
We were familiar with this route.
