Description of the walk

(S/E) Leave the car park heading towards the D27 road. Cross it as soon as possible (there is a pedestrian crossing just after the bus stop). Then follow the road until you pass the Hôtel Beau Séjour.

Cross the D86 road (known as the Route de Woerth when heading towards Durrenbach) and take the footpath leading to the Maison des Associations car park.

Go under the building through the archway between the Maison des Associations and the Eaux de la Sauer building.
Just after the archway, there is a drinking fountain provided free of charge by the water board and two picnic tables.

(1) Take the cycle path on the left until you reach the junction with Route de Gunstett. Cross Route de Gunstett with great care due to heavy traffic (protected crossing).

Turn immediately right to follow the cycle path that runs alongside Route de Gunstett. Pass the entrance to Didiland leisure park and cross Route de Gunstett with care (protected crossing) to continue along the cycle path, which soon crosses over the Sauer. A pretty step-style wash house is situated on the banks of the Sauer on the other side of the road, right next to the bridge (access via a pedestrian crossing).
Continue along the cycle path, which passes through a landscaped area near the entrance to Gunstett.

(2) Turn right onto the farm track which serves a few houses and runs alongside an open field on the left.

The farm track turns left, runs alongside gardens before crossing the edge of the Bois de Beuelmatt and then joins the Impasse de la Rivière after passing a few fields and pastures. Go straight on to the end of the cul-de-sac.

(3) Turn right onto the street that ends at the banks of the Sauer. Walk to the pretty wooden wash house on the Sauer.
Walk back a few dozen metres and, at a large square just before the first house on the right, turn right to cross this wide open space.

Turn right before the mill to cross the Sauer. Go round the mill by turning left. Turn left again to cross the bridge over the Sauer and head towards the sawmill.

(4) In front of the sawmill, turn right onto the forest track heading south-east. After crossing the Sauer again, at the junction of forest tracks, take the one on the left (Rue de Gunstett). Continue straight on to Biblisheim.

(5) At the entrance to Biblisheim, continue straight on to the T-junction. Turn left, cross the Sauer and, at the next junction, continue straight on along the road which leaves the village shortly afterwards heading north. Cross the Altbach stream.

(6) A little further on, turn right onto a farm track.
Shortly afterwards, you will see the buildings of the Biblisheim sewage treatment plant on the left, some distance away.

Continue straight on along the farm track, which eventually turns into a grassy path running alongside a small canal, bordered and obscured by gorse for much of the way through the hamlet of Kuppenmatten.
The path turns left to cross the small canal and becomes a stony farm track again. Continue straight on.

(7) The service track turns right at a right angle and heads towards the railway line, then turns left to run alongside it (slightly below).

(8) At the railway crossing, turn left onto the farm track which leads away from the railway line.

Continue straight on until you reach a mound of earth covered in reeds. Climb it or go round it to the right along the edge of the field to join the service track heading north-east. This track is a tree-lined lane that leads onto the D250 road.

(9) Turn left and, at the wayside shrine, cross the road to take the farm track that branches off to the right towards the Forest of Surbourg.
The track crosses an open area with fruit trees before reaching the forest. It then becomes a forest lane that starts to climb before levelling out. At the third crossroads, turn left and, two to three hundred metres further on, you’ll come out onto a lovely lane at a right angle.

(10) Turn right and continue straight ahead along this forest lane, even when it appears to close in (it starts to climb from this point). You will eventually reach a crossroads with a forest road.

(11) Turn right onto the road to cross an open area. At the next junction, turn left onto the path at the edge of the Heidenbusch woods.
The path enters the woods, crosses through them, before continuing along the southern edge of the woods. Towards the end of the woods, the path turns to the right and, in this section, becomes less distinct.

On leaving the woodland, the path is flat and follows a boundary fence on the left-hand side.

When the path passes under a medium-voltage power line, continue left onto a grassy track at the edge of open fields. This track follows a fence but is not very well marked (only tyre tracks in the grass). Those who prefer can continue along the path to the right to reach a road that allows you to bypass this poorly marked area. You will emerge onto a farm track at a right-angle bend.

(12) Continue straight on towards the west along the path, which rises slightly and passes by a wayside cross before overlooking the village of Gunstett. Continue straight on to reach Rue des Seigneurs.

Continue straight ahead into Rue des Romains, which serves various houses whilst remaining at the same level, before descending towards Rue du Général de Gaulle.

(13) When you reach this street, turn right, cross the road to join the cycle path you took on the way out, near the village exit.

(2) Continue straight on to return to the car park via the same route as on the way out (S/E).

Notes

The car park is located next to the spa and rehabilitation centre. Alternatively, there is another car park at the Maison des Associations, next to the roundabout where the D27 and D250 roads meet (the route passes this point shortly after setting off and on the return journey).

This walk takes place on varied terrain, which may be damp or even slightly muddy, so suitable footwear is essential.

Worth a visit

Morsbronn-les-Bains
History
6 August 1870, Battle of Frœschwiller-Wœrth.
In the spring of 1904, a drilling operation by the Gewerkschaft Gute Hoffnung, searching for oil, discovered a hot spring at a depth of 450 metres, in the north-west, on the edge of the Route de Frœschwiller leading to the village of Eberbach-Wœrth and the hamlet of Lausberg. Georges Urban, a restaurateur from Morsbronn, bought the deposit and, following analyses, this reserve of hot water at 42°C was found to have beneficial properties for rheumatism as it is rich in sodium chloride and calcium.

Monuments
All Saints’ Church: Morsbronn is one of some 50 towns in Alsace with a church serving multiple parishes.
Several monuments commemorating those who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, including the impressive ‘Adler’ (‘Eagle’), not far from the Bouygues telephone exchange on the heights above the village.

Thermal Bathing in Morsbronn-les-Bains

The thermal water of Morsbronn-les-Bains comes from two natural springs discovered in 1904 during drilling operations carried out to locate oil deposits in the region: the “Les Cuirassiers” spring at 38.9°C, drawn from a depth of 400 metres, and the “Saint Arbogast” spring at 41.9°C, drawn from a depth of 670 metres.

These two catchments provide the spa with an abundant flow of naturally warm water rich in sodium chloride, calcium, magnesium and sulphur.

With their sedative, analgesic and relaxing properties, these waters are recommended for the treatment of:

- chronic and debilitating inflammatory rheumatism,
- spinal, cervical or lumbar osteoarthritis, hip or knee osteoarthritis
- fibromyalgia,
- progressive polyarthritis,
- the after-effects of osteoarticular trauma.

A lovely route with stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the chance to see some beautiful wash houses: I highly recommend it.
We were delighted to complete this route, which was almost entirely on footpaths.

A lovely walk. As it’s very open, it’s best done in spring to enjoy the first rays of sunshine. At the mill, the path is blocked off and marked as private. You simply need to go round it to get back onto the path. There were a few moments of uncertainty at point 11, but with the app on your phone, you can’t get lost.

Thank you for this route, which allows for a fairly long hike without any major difficulties.
There are a few minor inaccuracies in the route description in places (2, 4, 8, 11, 12), but the detailed map makes it fairly easy to sort things out.
A minor difficulty at this time of year is the path leading to point 9, as it hasn’t been mown and picking up ticks is guaranteed.
Fortunately, the large meadow between points 11 and 12 had just been mown, otherwise it would have been tricky. There isn’t really a path in this area.
I find the interest in the traditional local architecture a bit overrated, but on the other hand, there is an ‘Empress’s Bench’ at point 9, a spot ideal for a picnic halfway through the walk despite the proximity of the busy road.
