In the Morsbronn-les-Bains plain

A lovely, easy walk on flat ground through the Bieberbach and Sauer valleys. As well as beautiful scenery, it offers views of several wayside crucifixes and traditional Alsatian architecture.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the spa centre.
(S/E) Leave the car park and head towards the D27; cross the road as soon as possible (there is a pedestrian crossing just after the bus stop). Then walk alongside the road until you pass the Hôtel Beau Séjour.
Cross the D86 road (known as the Route de Woerth when heading towards Durrenbach) and take the footpath leading to the Maison des Associations car park.
Go under the building through the archway between the Maison des Associations and the Eaux de la Sauer premises.
Just past the archway, there is a drinking fountain provided free of charge by the water board and two picnic tables.

(1) Take the cycle path by turning right (heading south-east). The cycle path soon runs alongside the D86 (known as the Route de Woerth when coming from Durrenbach).
When you reach a small copse, take the farm track on the left which cuts through it, then turn right to follow the edge of the field.
The farm track turns left and runs alongside the small copse. When you reach the end of the copse, turn right onto a farm track that runs alongside the field at the edge of a strip of vegetation concealing a small (intermittent) stream.
The farm track enters a small copse.

(2) The track crosses the copse and emerges at a closed metal gate near the sports grounds. Take the footpath to the right of the gate, which allows pedestrians to continue their route.
Continue straight on along the service track, passing under the high-voltage power line.
At the T-junction, turn left onto the service track, which crosses the Bieberbach shortly afterwards.
At the next junction, turn right and continue straight on until you reach the vicinity of the River Sauer.

(3) Turn right onto a farm track (Rue de Gunstett) which runs some distance alongside the River Sauer. Continue straight on.

(4) Immediately after the farm and the house, turn right onto the grassy farm track.
At the next junction, turn right onto a path which also serves as a cycle path.
Cross the River Bieberbach and continue straight on towards Durrenbach. The track ends at Rue du Chemin de Fer, which joins the main road at a wayside shrine.

(5) Turn right onto the D86 and, after the bend, follow Rue des Vignes, which initially runs parallel to the D86.
This street curves to the left and climbs alongside the cemetery.

(6) At the end of Rue des Vignes, continue straight on along a farm track that passes under the high-voltage power line.
Continue along the track until you reach the D286 road near a junction with another farm track. At the junction, there is a wayside cross in a copse of trees.

(7) Take the farm track after crossing the D286 road, which is almost directly opposite.
When you reach a horticultural (or market garden) holding, continue along the farm track which goes round the holding on the left.

(8) At the next crossroads where four farm tracks meet, carry on straight ahead towards the village of Hegeney.
At the end of the farm track, cross the D27 road with great care (there are pedestrian crossings slightly set back from the track) as there is heavy traffic.
After crossing, walk up the main street opposite until you reach the church.

(9) At the church, turn right into Rue du Verger and follow it straight on to the end.
Carry on straight ahead along the shared path for pedestrians, cyclists and tractors. This path takes a right-angle bend to the right straight from the start and winds its way through the fields.
Follow it to Rue des Vergers in Morsbronn-les-Bains.

(10) Turn right onto Rue Vieille. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the main road.
Turn left and, shortly afterwards at the next junction, turn right onto Rue de Froeschwiller (the second on the right)
Follow it straight on until you reach the footpath on the right after the Chemin des Sources. This footpath leads back to the car park near the spa centre, which marks the end of this walk (S/E).

Notes

The car park is located next to the spa and functional rehabilitation centre. Alternatively, there is another car park at the Maison des Associations, next to the roundabout where the D27 and D250 roads meet (the route passes this point at the start of the walk; in which case, the route description should be adjusted).

This walk takes place over varied terrain, which may be damp or even slightly muddy, so you’ll need suitable footwear.

Worth a visit

Morsbronn-les-Bains

History
6 August 1870, Battle of Frœschwiller-Wœrth.
In the spring of 1904, a borehole drilled by the Gewerkschaft Gute Hoffnung, whilst searching for oil, discovered a hot spring at a depth of 450 metres, to the north-west, on the edge of the Frœschwiller road leading to the village of Eberbach-Wœrth and the hamlet of Lausberg. Georges Urban, a restaurant owner from Morsbronn, bought the spring and, following analyses, this hot water reserve at 41.9°C was found to have beneficial properties for rheumatism as it is rich in sodium chloride and calcium.

Places and monuments
All Saints’ Church: Morsbronn is one of around 50 towns in Alsace with a church serving multiple parishes.
There are several memorials to those who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, including the impressive ‘Adler’ (‘Eagle’), not far from the Bouygues telephone relay station on the hills above the village.

Thermal spas in Morsbronn-les-Bains

The thermal water at Morsbronn-les-Bains comes from two natural springs discovered in 1904 during drilling carried out to locate oil deposits in the region: the ‘Les Cuirassiers’ spring at 38.9°C, drawn from a depth of 400 metres, and the ‘Saint Arbogast’ spring at 41.9°C, drawn from a depth of 670 metres.
These two extraction points provide the spa with an abundant supply of naturally warm water rich in sodium chloride, calcium, magnesium and sulphur.

A rather disappointing walk, as there’s not much to it apart from the walking itself.....;
suggestion: include a stop at the hot springs and the eagle statue

Hello,

Thank you for your message.
I’ve done this route at other times of the year when the whole trail was rather dusty due to the severe drought… The long spell of rain and the recent snow this winter can largely explain the conditions we found (and it was even to be expected). This route is mainly about enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings in this part of Alsace, even if it isn’t the Vosges. Personally, I find charm even in the lowlands, which is constantly renewed with the changing seasons.
Enjoy your walks.

Whilst the description of the route’s stages is spot on (it’s impossible to get lost if you follow them), the route itself isn’t particularly interesting. Admittedly, we passed several historic wayside crosses and were out in the sunshine all day, but we also had our feet in the mud and had to navigate large puddles blocking the path along almost the entire ‘nature’ section (the area is damp and the snowmelt probably didn’t help matters), whilst the noise from mopeds without silencers plagued the other half of the route (through villages and near roads). Admittedly, it was a Sunday, and the local lads don’t have much else to do apart from revving their bikes ;-))

Taken on a freezing cold winter’s day in the sunshine – a very easy walk with the chance to spot a few barnacle geese
