Circular in the Lacanau National Forest

Most of the route consists of forest paths with a few sections on the road and cycle path. The hard surfaces are welcome as walking in the sand is tiring. You can enjoy views of the Étang du Cousseau and the Marais de Talaris with its flora and fauna. Le Moutchic and its calm waters, sailing boats, picnic spots and swimming areas. Finally, the ocean, with its rough waters that are perfect for surfers.

Description of the walk

The starting point is located in the Étang du Cousseau car park, also known as the Marmande car park.

(S/E) From this car park, head into the forest towards the Étang de Cousseau, following the cycle path to the bicycle park.

(1) Enter the reserve, turn left and follow the path to a crossroads.

(2) Turn right, heading east, walk along the right-hand side of the Étang de Cousseau and continue to the Dune de l'Espéron.

(3) Wooden viewpoint over the Étang du Cousseau. The Tour Galip is nearby and well worth climbing for the many birds of the Lac du Cousseau and Marais de Talaris: ducks, snipe, grey cranes in winter, marsh harriers and black kites.
Turn right and continue along the path.

(4) Continue to the left, leaving the lake until you reach the Carrefour de Casseau.

(5) Follow the path on the left, again parallel to the cycle path, and continue.

(6) Join the cycle path coming from Lacanau Océan and leave it to continue south-east towards Lac de Lacanau. Cross the D6 very carefully and reach a fork.

(7) Turn left onto the cycle path to reach the shores of Lac de Lacanau (Le Moutchic).

(8) Turn around on the cycle path.

(7) Turn left and follow the cycle path. Go under the D6 and continue westwards, along the golf course towards the ocean.

(9) At the entrance to Lacanau Océan, turn right towards the ocean, taking the cycle path, and continue in the same direction until you reach the beach.

(10) Go down to the beach and walk along the ocean on your left.

(11) Climb up the dunes on the right, using the passages between the beach grass. Cross a track and arrive at another crossroads.

(12) Follow a firebreak on the left until you reach a cycle path.

(13) Cross it and follow the forest path to the Marmande car park (S/E).
