Brié and Angonnes/Villeneuve d'Uriage/Romage circular loop

A circular walk that passes through the Herbeys ridges and offers a splendid view of the start of the Belledonne range and Uriage Castle. You then pass through the Bois du Fournet above the Uriage valley and catch sight of the Dent de Crolles and Chamechaude. Return via the Montagne du Mulet and rejoin the Herbeys ridges.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at the Brié and Angonnes cemetery. If this is full, there is a car park near the town hall or parking available along the departmental road towards Uriage.
Please take care not to block the exit for fire engines.

(S/E) Join the departmental road and follow it for a few metres towards Uriage.

(1) Turn left onto a small path that climbs alongside some barbed wire and you’ll soon come out onto a wide path leading up from the main road.
If you have parked along the main road, take the wide path which will lead you to this spot.

(2) You have a choice for the start of the route to the Herbeys ridges:

  • either take the signposted path used on this hike, the route on the right. Perfect for the colder months, it offers a better view of the Chamrousse mountain.
  • or take the path opposite, which climbs more steeply and is more shaded, perfect for summer and hot weather.

Either way, both routes will take you to the same spot: a beautiful viewpoint over Grenoble next to the model aircraft site.
Continue straight on along the ridge path.

(3) At the fork, continue straight on towards Villeneuve d’Uriage. After a few metres, you’ll come to another fork. Turn right, walk down a few metres and you’ll reach a junction with three other paths.
Then follow the path furthest to the left towards Villeneuve, which climbs up to the ridge orientation table and the Cochet farm.
Thesecond path leads down towards Uriage.

(4) When you reach the Cochet farm, continue along the path on the right and ignore the path on the left, which you will take on your return later. Enjoy the views over Chamrousse, Belledonne and Uriage Castle, which will soon come into view.

(5) On reaching Villeneuve d'Uriage, join the road leading up from Uriage. At the junction, turn left towards the cemetery. Once past the cemetery, continue straight on until you reach the junction on the dead-end road.
Do not follow the green signposting, but carry on straight ahead along the road, passing the wash house.

(6) Just after this, the tarmac road ends and continues as a forest track.
Please note: this section in the forest, which is more shaded, is quite muddy, at least in autumn.
Go straight on at the first fork and continue to the second.

(7) Stay on the path marked in yellow, which heads right until you reach another fork.

(8) Take the path on the left which climbs up to another fork. Do not turn right.

(9) Continue along the smaller path on the left, leaving thePR®. The track here is narrow, slippery and sometimes muddy. You will then come out onto a new forest track.

(10) Carry on to the right along this forest track and follow it to the junction.

(11) At the signpost (Champ Mulet) with yellow markings, head up to the left towards Herbeys and the Fort des Quatre Seigneurs.
At the end of the climb, turn left and you will reach a junction.

(12) You can turn left to climb up to the Fort des Quatre Seigneurs or turn right towards Herbeys, following this route description.
Follow the tarmac road for a short while, then look out for a dirt track leading downhill opposite. Continue downhill towards Herbeys, alternating between short stretches on the road and the dirt track, until you reach the hamlet of La Côte.

(13) After passing a pretty drinking trough, do not follow the signs for Herbeys but turn immediately right down the small slope. At the bottom of the slope, turn right, then left.

(14) Join the Route de la Côte and follow it downhill to the next junction. Watch out for traffic, even though this road is quiet.

(15) Follow the tarmac road called Chemin des Terres. Don’t worry about the ‘no through road’ sign; it applies to the small path branching off to the right.
Stay on this road until you reach Le Noyaret. Do not follow the yellow-marked route to Herbeys, but continue on the quiet road. Pass in front of the fields belonging to the Charrières farm.

(16) When you reach the hamlet of Noyaret, take the short path leading downhill, just after the Chemin de l’Abreuvoir. Walk past the Cochet Farm cheese dairy. Carefully cross the main road linking Villeneuve d’Uriage to Herbeys and head back up the Chemin de Pragard towards the Cochet Farm dairy. Walk past the farm and rejoin the Chemin des Crêtes.

(4) Turn right, heading in the opposite direction to return to your starting point (S/E).

A weekday walk that isn’t very popular with hikers. It does run quite close to houses in places and involves a bit of walking along roads, but it’s true that we did lose our way a few times, which gave us the chance to see some lovely houses with magnificent views over Grenoble and the surrounding area. Perfect for a family outing.

A lovely route, with the option of taking a detour to create a circular route without ever passing the same spot twice: at Au Noyaret, head down to Herbeys, follow the Villard stream and enjoy a snack; at this point, turn left onto the forest track marked with a Yellow Cross – a gentle climb followed by a long descent towards Les Métraux – 20km / 585m elevation gain in total, according to the watch
