Circular route around Locquirec via Île Blanche and Les Sables Blancs

This easy hike will take you from one side of the Locquirec headland to the other, following the left bank of the Douron estuary, then through the countryside, vegetable fields and pretty valleys hiding small streams, until you reach the north-western coast of the headland. The GR® 34 offers beautiful views from the rocky points of Corbeau and Château. You will also walk along beautiful beaches, such as Sables Blancs, Porz Biliec and Fond de la Baie, where you can walk along the shore as you please, depending on the tide. You will also pass through part of Locquirec, where you can admire the church, the narrow streets, the small harbour and the seafront, which you will follow to the end.

Description of the walk

The starting point is located in a car park on Allée des Pins above Fond de la Baie beach.

(S/E) Head south-east, turn left towards the motorhome parking area and join the GR® 34.

(1) Turn right. Stay on the various paths closest to the shore. Go around the Manoir de l'Île Blanche, which has been converted into a visitor centre, and reach the D142 at the edge of the bridge.

(2) Cross the road carefully and continue straight ahead. Pass by the Manoir de la Tour d'Argent and climb up to the hamlet of Linguez and its chapel.

(3) Then head west opposite the chapel. Continue along the stream behind the farm and at the next crossroads, head south on the left onto the GR® du Pays de Morlaix. Further on, you will reach the hamlet of Roc'h Hervé. Follow the white path to reach a crossroads leading to a fountain.

(4) Leave the GRP®, follow the tarmac road to the right and you will reach a crossroads at Kergreïz.

(5) Turn right and very quickly turn left into a dead end that continues as a grassy path. Continue along a small track that winds between vegetable fields and leads to a road at Kermelven.

(6) Turn left and at the crossroads turn right towards the Notre-Dame des Joies Chapel.

(7) At the foot of the building, take the path on the left, which descends between two hedges. A little further down, it turns north-east. Continue and pass Milin Menguy.

(8) Cross the stream and go up the road. Ignore the path on the left, pass the water tower and you will arrive at a crossroads with a bus shelter and a well.

(9) Go straight ahead into Rue de Kerboulic, which you will quickly leave by taking Rue Banell Skolig on the left. After the right-hand bend, turn left and continue along the path that runs alongside the farm. Continue across the fields, staying on the marked path. Cross Chemin de Keriziou and head north to join the D 64 at Keraël.

(10) Turn left, leave the main road at the first crossroads and turn right, crossing the crossroads a little further on, staying on the PR®. At the fork in the paths, head west (you can shorten the route by turning right down the slope) and you will reach the Moulin de la Rive.

(11) Take the GR® 34 on your right, heading due north. Stay on the GR® and do not leave it. Continue until you reach Plage des Sables Blancs. Pass the toilet block and follow the road. Continue to the sharp bend in the road and the start of the small path.

(12) Take the marked trail straight ahead and you will arrive near an alleyway where the GR® trail begins.

(13) Leave the GR® for a short while and continue straight ahead for a few dozen metres to Pointe du Corbeau to admire the landscape. Retrace your steps.

(13) Continue on the left. At the crossroads, go straight ahead and a little further on, follow the GR® which leaves the road on the left into the vegetation. You will then reach the Porz Biliec wash house.

(14) Head towards the seafront. You can then choose to walk along the beach to the car park to rejoin the trail, or follow the path that runs alongside the beach. Continue along the GR®34 and go around Pointe du Château.

(15) Then follow the road that leads to the chapel and then to the port. Follow the water as closely as possible and, at a bend, take the Venelle de la Douane, which runs along the shore. Look for the stairs that start on the right.

(16) The route leads to the end of the street and back, allowing you to enjoy the area. Take the stairs and then the Route de Plestin on your left. A little further on, between two houses, you will find a small street that leads down to the beach. Take it and follow it to the right behind the houses when it turns into a small path. It rejoins the Route de Plestin a little further on. Follow this street very carefully. Pass the first road on the left, and shortly afterwards, you will find the junction with Chemin de la Falaise on the left.

(17) Follow this path and, after the last house on the right, you will come to a junction with a small path on your left.

(18) Take this path and, after a right-hand bend, you will come out onto the beach. Here again, you have the choice between the beach or the path. The two routes meet at the junction with the sports ground road.

(1) Then take the road that goes up to the right, follow the route you took on the way there in the opposite direction and return to the car park on Allée des Pins (S/E).

A circular section of the GR34 (stunning scenery), but after that, the signposting is very poor. Everything is marked in the same colour and there are no route markers at all!!! I met other hikers and they felt exactly the same way!
A shame
