Description of the walk

Park at the exit of Collat, towards Paullaget, on the esplanade on the left, next to the picnic area.

(S/E) Head south. Keep left at the two close junctions and you will reach a crossroads after the wash house.

(1) Take the tarmac road on the left, downhill. Then continue along a forest track through pine woods. You will reach Mandaroux farm.

(2) Turn left onto the tarmac road and continue downhill until you reach another crossroads at a place called Grenier.

(3) Take the D4 on the right until you reach the "Sauvayer" sign.

(4) Turn right and climb up to the entrance to the hamlet of Sauvayer. At the crossroads, turn right.

(5) Before the houses, leave the road and take the path on the left into the woods. Continue uphill to reach a crossroads of paths, near a small pond.

(6) Continue straight ahead, crossing a stream further on. Stay on this path and, following a circular bend to the right, you will reach the hamlet of Chabestrat.

(7) Go straight through the hamlet, then take the road that climbs to the right. You will soon reach a crossroads with several paths leading in different directions.

(9) Ignore these various paths and keep right on the road to return to the original crossroads near the Collat wash house.

(1) Turn left and, following the same route as on the way there, return to the car park on the esplanade (S/E).

A hike in the true sense of the word, physically demanding on both the descents and ascents, with a good third of the route on tarmac. Some interesting viewpoints, particularly on the way back, overlooking the chain of volcanoes and a few hamlets with typical old stone buildings. A bucolic walk, mostly through forest, pleasant in summer.
Not suitable for pushchairs, as the descent along the forest path at the start is very steep and slippery, and the path is rutted, as is the ascent.
Walking poles and hiking boots will come in handy.
