Loop west of Vézelay

A gentle hike starting from the town of Vézelay and heading west. The end of the hike offers a spectacular view of the historic centre and the basilica. The hike is mainly on forest paths. No difficulties to be expected.

Description of the walk

Departure from Place du Champ de Foire.

(S/E) Head south on the D951. Take the first road on the right towards the gendarmerie and fire station.

(1) Less than 50 m before the two barracks, follow a path that opens up on the left. It runs alongside a small wood and a vineyard.

(2) Pass the youth hostel and continue straight ahead, crossing the road towards the hamlet of La Justice (street of the same name).

(3) At the fork, stay on the small road and continue in the same direction for about 2 km.

(4) Continue along the gently sloping path.

(5) After the summit, turn right.

(6) At the end of the road, take another road on the left.

(7) At the next intersection, take the straight track on the right that curves sharply to the left until you cross a forest road.

(8) Cross the road to stay on the path.

(9) At the end of the road, take a road on the left. After about 200 m, turn right. Continue straight ahead (north-west) until you reach the Chamoux cemetery.

(10) After passing the cemetery, cross the D951 carefully. Take the path on the left (uphill), then turn right onto a road.

(11) When you reach the edge of the field, follow the path on the right.

(12) At the entrance to the woods, keep left.

(13) At the next intersection, turn right. Walk east until you reach a paved road.

(14) Follow the road straight ahead. When the road turns right, turn left onto a path. Follow it until you reach the D36.

(16) Follow the road to the right for about 400 metres.

(16) Turn left towards the hamlet of La Goulote, then, just before the first house, take the path on the right (just after the field).

(17) The path joins the road for a few metres. Then keep left to continue along the path.

(18) At the T-junction, turn right. At the next intersection (elevation 212), turn right.

(19) Join a small road and follow it to the left. When the road turns right, leave it and continue straight ahead on a path. When you reach the tarmac, turn right and you will find yourself at Place du Champ de Foire (S/E).

A beautiful forest hike!
Remember to turn around on the first climb: superb view of Vézelay.
(Is there a risk of hunting?)
