Bois des Roches from Rocheville

This walk around Rocheville gives pride of place to paths and small roads. It passes through the Bois de la Grande Roche, the Bois de la Petite Roche and its covered walkway, which are real curiosities in the area. There are many passages through woods or forests, which are fairly sheltered from the sun and allow you to discover a slightly wilder side of the Cotentin. Some passages can be a little damp depending on the season, and hiking boots are recommended to prevent slipping.

Description of the walk

The walk starts from the car park in front of Rocheville church, where there is always space.

(S/E) Go around the church and cemetery on the left and follow Rue de la Chevalerie on the right. Turn right onto Route de la Cage.

(1) Ignore the Voie Verte on the right (return) and continue straight ahead until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Leave the road and take the shaded path almost opposite. There aren't many places to see the sky, as the path is shaded and the sky is green! Turn left and you will come to a crossroads.

(3) Turn left and go down the path through the woods until you reach the D418.

(4) A few metres before you get there, turn right at the hairpin bend and continue down a slight slope near the Douve (wetter area). This is the wildest part and you may see animal tracks in the old puddles or mud. The path then climbs back up towards Les Riolleries and joins the D167.

(5) Cross it carefully, take the small road opposite and continue to the next road on the right: signposted "60-62".

(6) Turn onto it. The road turns into a path after a beautiful farm on the right. Continue along this path to the Bois de la Grosse Roche and turn left at the edge of the woods.

(7) Enter the woods. The more adventurous will enjoy climbing this rocky outcrop (sandstone). Then take the path on the right towards the Bois de la Petite Roche. Turn left to see the remains of the covered walkway and, if you wish, continue your climb through this new rock formation. Be careful, as it seems that a few goblins or korrigans still linger here.

(8) Take the path, then the road, to arrive at a place called Le Câtillon.

(9) Take the path on the left, which slopes gently downwards, and continue towards the Greenway.

(10) At this point, the Greenway rises above you and it is best to turn left and walk about twenty metres to find an access point and climb up onto it. Then turn right. Continue to the Route de la Cage.

(1) Turn left and, following the same route as on the way there, return to the church car park (S/E).
