Bistaeder from Ainhoa

Ainhoa, ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, invites you to discover its gentle environment. The shimmering half-timbered houses in the village centre give way to peaceful countryside dotted with isolated farms. A steady but relatively short climb in the company of pottoks and flocks of sheep takes you up the hillsides and mountains. This is followed by a magnificent open balcony path, offering a vast panorama of Spain, the Nivelle valley, the Rhune and, further away, the coast. Three huge white crosses proudly dominating the village of Ainhoa and facing the pyramidal summit of Atxuria guide your steps towards Notre-Dame de l'Aubépine, a divine spot for a picnic. Here, splendid Basque steles add to the spiritual dimension of this unique viewpoint.

Description of the walk

On the A63, take exit 5 (Bayonne Sud) and follow the D932 towards Ustaritz and Cambo-les-Bains. After 15 km, follow the Cambo exit ramp, then continue right towards Espelette (D918). After the Espelette exit, at the junction with the D20, turn left to continue towards Ainhoa. Pass the Col de Pinodieta and reach Ainhoa (car park near the fronton).

(S/E) From the fronton square, go up the main street (D20) on the right towards the church. Pass the crossroads and continue to the bend at the end of the village.

(1) Leave the main street before the first bend, going straight down and then immediately left. Take the street on the right, then at the next junction go up to the right at the car park and stream until you reach a Y-junction.

(2) Go down to the left (dead end straight ahead). The road goes uphill. Pass the first house and continue to an intersection towards Arbonakoborda.

(3) At the crossroads, take the road on the left, then left again. Continue to the D20 (stop sign).

(4) Cross the main road carefully and continue straight ahead on the road that descends to the right until you reach a crossroads.

(5) At the bottom, at the bend, continue straight ahead along a track until you reach a footbridge and a ford. Cross the footbridge and continue along the track until you reach a path that climbs to the left.

(6) Follow this steep track until you reach a road, which you should climb to the left. Continue until you reach a fork after a cattle grid.

(7) Leave the road and turn left uphill onto a track, then a path. Further up, follow a straight fence on the left and continue in the same direction until you reach a small summit (elevation 389).

(8) Turn left onto the ridge, descend towards a meadow (with a sheepfold) and walk along it on the left and below, towards a gate. After the gate, take the track and follow it to the left until you reach a farm.

(9) Leave the entrance (two red wooden posts) to a farm (Erremuntenborda) on your right and continue straight ahead, heading north, until you reach a fork halfway up the slope between Erremuntenborda and the main ridge.

(10) Leave the main path and turn left onto a balcony path. At a small beech grove, the path passes just to the left of the large beech tree. Continue in this direction until you arrive slightly above three large white crosses on your left. Join them (red and whiteGR®10markings) and the Arantze chapel (Notre-Dame de l'Aubépine).

(11) To the right of the chapel, start descending on a stony track. Follow it, passing in front of the Arantzazu fountain (virgin on the rock, on your left). Join a small road and take it to the right until you reach the first junction.

(12) Turn left and, at the end, take the pedestrian street between the recycling bins and the Maison pour Tous community centre. Walk up the alleyway that leads to the main street (D20) to return to the church and the pelota court. Turn right towards the square (S/E).

Worth a visit

(11) The disc-shaped steles
Close to the chapel, several disc-shaped steles are arranged at the foot of the three large crosses. Composed of a granite base topped with a disc engraved with various motifs, these steles are not always associated with graves. The variety of symbols dates back to a pre-Christian era.

(11) The Chapel of Arantza or Our Lady of the Hawthorn
Located at an altitude of 389 metres on an idyllic viewpoint, the Chapel of Arantze (meaning hawthorn) originated following the apparition of the Virgin Mary to a young shepherd. She is said to have appeared to him near the village, in a hawthorn bush. Nearby, 26 disc-shaped and tabular steles, symbols of Basque funerary art, offer a magnificent panorama of the Xareta valley, the Rhune and the ocean.

A perfect circular route with magnificent scenery, two slightly challenging climbs and a balcony trail before reaching the Aubépine chapel. I've done it several times. Many thanks.

Hello,
We did this route yesterday in beautiful weather! We did it in reverse, but it's definitely more interesting to do it as described so you can enjoy the chapel longer on the way back and have an easier descent...
Otherwise, it's a nice walk but not exceptional either. I've done better ones in the area, but it's a nice way to spend an afternoon and easy to follow as everything is signposted!
See you soon!

A magnificent hike! A little perseverance is required on the climbs up to point 10, but after that it's pure bliss!
It only gets busy from the chapel onwards, along the entire Way of the Cross.
Thank you for putting this route on Visorando.

Very pleasant walks.
Breathtaking views of the Sare Valley and surrounding peaks at several points along the hike.
The picnic at the Chapelle de l'Aubépine is a must.
I highly recommend it!

A beautiful walk with magnificent views.
It is interesting to arrive at the chapel after crossing several hills rather than taking the path that climbs directly from the village of Aïnhoa to the chapel, as suggested in other hikes.
There are a few slightly steep climbs, but they are easily manageable.
The paths are very passable and well maintained.
In short, it was a real pleasure!
