Belœil – Hyon

This eighth stage is certainly not the most pleasant part of this tour of Wallonia, as it passes through a heavily built-up area. Nevertheless, it is interesting to explore the Borinage not only through its countryside but also through its towns. You’ll find both aspects here. Accommodation with a local host.

Description of the walk

(S) At the junction of Rue de la Sablière and Rue aux Fleurs, in the village of Grandglise (Belœil), head towards the end of the street closest to you, where it bends to the left. At the next junction, turn left into Rue des Roches Rouges. At the T-junction, turn right into Rue Emile Royer. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the N505 (Rue d’Harchies). Cross it carefully, taking a slight right-left turn. Continue along Rue du Petit Coron. Turn right onto the first path after the bend and join the GR®121. Follow it to the left until you reach the N50 (Rue de Tournai – Route de Mons).

(1) Follow it to the right for a good stretch, ignoring all side roads to the right and left.

(2) Cross the N554 carefully and take the second street on the right, Rue de Chièvres, until you reach the Nimy-Blaton-Péronnes Canal. Follow the towpath to the left and turn left until you reach a narrowing in the canal. A small path on the bank to the left leads to Place Saint-Jean. Continue straight ahead until you reach Rue Omer Lescot.

(3) Turn right, cross over the canal and take Rue Delbory on the left; then turn left until you reach Quai Beuten and turn right. After passing under the second bridge, take a path on the right leading back to the Grand’Route de Mons/Rue de Tournai. Continue straight ahead until you reach a roundabout and carry on straight ahead into Rue de la Rivièrette.

(4) Without crossing the canal (a branch of the Haine), take the path on the left. At the end of this, a ‘footpath’ leads down to a track running alongside the A7 motorway below. To pass under the railway bridge, you’ll need to step down into the gutter for a step or two. The path then continues, leading back to Rue du Canal. After passing under a bridge, turn left onto Rue Louis Caty.

(5) Take the pedestrian/cycle bridge which takes you over the motorway and the canal. It leads onto Rue du Docteur Edmond Isaac. Follow this road until you reach Rue de la Station. Take the underpass and continue, with your back to the railway line, along Rue Paul Pastur. At the end of the car park, turn right onto Rue Courbelette. At each junction, carry straight on until you reach Rue Jules Destrée (N51).

(6) After a left-right turn, take Rue Modeste Carlier, then, at the first proper junction, turn left into Rue Modeste Derbaix until you reach the Grand’Place roundabout.

(7) Take the first street on the right, Rue du Village. At the next roundabout, it continues to the left. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the third roundabout.

(8) Keep left to join Rue Édouard Anseele. Go straight on. Cross the N545 via the road bridge and continue along Rue de Flénu.

(9) Take the first street on the right, Rue François André, and then immediately turn left onto Rue du Cayat. At the junction, turn left onto Rue du Campiau. At the five-way junction (Rue du Bois), carry on straight ahead onto Pavé du Vingt. Cross Avenue du Champ de Bataille and carry on straight ahead along Rue du Rosaire.

(10) Cross Rue à Charettes and follow Voie de Wasmes, then take the path leading straight ahead at the corner of the street. Come out onto Rue du Sergent. Turn right, then right again onto Rue d’Ostenne to go round the slag heap as far as the Ravel for line 98. Follow it to the left. Stay on it until you reach Rue de Frameries. Go under it and continue straight ahead until you reach Rue de l’Espinette.

(11) First turn right then left to continue along the farm track. Cross the bridge over the railway lines and emerge onto Rue de Monte-en-Peine (E).
