Beauregard from Le Villaret and return via Les Arnauds

This hike is a real treat for the eyes, with the summit of Beauregard in the Connex offering a sweeping panorama of southern Isère and all the surrounding mountain ranges, particularly the Laffrey Lakes. This circular route also allows you to discover the small, typical hamlets of the Matheysine region.

Description of the walk

This walk starts in the hamlet of Le Villaret in the commune of Saint-Jean-de-Vaulx. There are a few parking spaces available at the entrance to the hamlet when arriving from Laffrey, next to an EDF transformer.

(S/E) Head towards the wash house in the centre of the village, staying on the main road; the first hiking signs are just above the wash house. Take the first path on the left and begin the ascent.

(1) Leave this wide path and take a path on the right (signposted); the slope becomes steeper.

(2) Ignore the path that continues straight ahead and turn left.
The path joins the track leading up from Notre-Dame de Vaulx and runs alongside an artificial reservoir.

(3) The actual ascent to the summit is more or less on a northward bearing, taking the Beauregard ridge and following the numerous paths that lead to the summit, where an information board provides details about the panorama.

(4) From the summit, turn back and head for a sheepfold situated at around 1,513 m.

(5) Take the path that passes above the sheepfold; this climbs gently up the Beauregard slope and continues through the mountain pasture. The path descends after about 700 m to the entrance of a magnificent beech forest.

(6) Continue in the same direction (north), cross a meadow and, at the end of it, find a gap in the fence leading to a forest track, which you follow for a further 700 m.
Please note that the signposting is very sparse.

(7) Join the signposted path, turn right and head towards the hamlet of Les Arnauds. Cross the hamlet by following the road downhill.

(8) After the first hairpin bend, a path on the right (signposted) allows you to cut across another large hairpin bend.

(9) Continue along the road, as access to the path appears to have been blocked off by the residents of the house situated below the road. Keep heading due south.

(10) After this tarmac section, find the path on the left that leads to the village of Saint-Jean-de-Vaulx. Continue towards the church.

(11) Take the path that runs alongside the road and leads back to the starting point (S/E).

A very beautiful route, done in reverse, with lots of frost on the trees in the first part of the trail.
The weather was very cold and clear. Unfortunately, there was a strong southerly wind, so we didn't linger at the summit.

Hike completed in cloudy weather. Magnificent landscapes and views of the lakes. The descent is less steep, making it more enjoyable.

SUCH A BEAUTIFUL HIKE. SOMETIMES THROUGH THE WOODS, SOMETIMES WITH A 360-DEGREE PANORAMIC VIEW OF VERCORS, GRENOBLE, CHAMROUSSE, THE MATHEYSIN PLATEAU AND OBIOU;
The path isn’t always clearly marked, cutting across fields, but with GPS there’s no problem...

A circular route using GPS, so no problems with navigation. An easy hike (4 hours including a picnic), ideal for families. Stunning 360° views on this beautiful sunny day, lovely beech forest. Only the end is a bit long, with a stretch of tarmac road. I recommend it

Hello everyone,
Parking at Le Villaret is virtually impossible: you need to park in front of the St-Jean de Vx cemetery and make your way to Le Villaret via the pleasant marked path that runs alongside the road below. (See point 11 on the Visorando map).
The climb is steep but well shaded all the way to the Petit Lac.
Between point 6 and point 7 we navigated using the map and GPS: we saw signposts that had been knocked over and/or vandalised.
At point 9, we confirmed that the path has unfortunately been closed off by local residents, meaning you have to stay on the tarmac road.
To sum up, a very beautiful, pleasant hike with stunning views in good weather.
