Description of the walk

Park next to the church in Bassignac-le-Haut. Take the time to admire the magnificent15th-century calvary, a veritable stone gospel.

(S/E) With your back to the church, take Rue du Courijou and you will come to a T-junction.

(1) Take the road on the right. You will see two paths marked "Séchoir" on your right. Ignore the first one.

(2) Turn onto the second path and follow it to a crossroads with a path on your right that goes uphill, still marked "Séchoir".

(3) Do not take this path, but instead take the path opposite which descends (marked with yellow mountain bike signs). Continue north-east until you reach a three-way junction.

(4) Continue straight ahead, then walk along the top of the Dordogne, which can be seen through the foliage. You will come to a road. This is the location of an impressive viewpoint over the river.

(5) Then take the road on the right and go up to the entrance to Bassignac-le-Haut.

(6) Turn right onto Rue du Barrio and head to the church car park (S/E).

Notes

There is also a much more challenging 14 km alternative route called "Hike to the Trou du Loup in Bassignac-le-Haut".

Worth a visit

Church.

Calvary of Bassignac-le-Haut.

Dordogne.

In the same commune of Bassignac-le-Haut is Vielzot, the birthplace of Saint Étienne d'Obazine, who founded the abbey of the same name. A small, well-maintained chapel on the site perpetuates his memory.
