Dam and reservoir above the former Chiavari penitentiary

At Verghia, the D55 heads inland through eucalyptus woods towards the town of Coti-Chiavari. When you reach the prison, park under the eucalyptus trees.

(S/E) Drive forward a few metres, then turn left to climb up to the buried cistern.

(1) Return towards the prison and continue along the road until you reach the bend.

(2) Ignore the track that descends to the left and take the other one. After a few dozen metres, follow the path on the right and join a track.

(3) Turn left and follow this track, going straight ahead, parallel to the RD55. Further on, negotiate a left-hand bend, keeping on the same track, then another right-hand bend and you will reach the prison dam and the reservoir.

(4) Turn left to go around it clockwise. Goldfish sleep at the bottom, dragonflies swarm, and there are at least two frogs. Beautiful view of the valley and the coast.

(5) Leave a path on the left and finish the tour of the reservoir.

(4) Take the same route back to the car park (S/E).

Variation: from the top of the dam, a steep path descends to its foot and joins a track. Then turn left to rejoin the route described between (2) and (3).
