Barn Hill, Cox Tor, Roos, and Staple Tor then follow a leat to Windy Cross

This walk, although relatively short, may play tricks with the mind. The first is seeing Cox Tor, the first objective, directly north of the car park. It appears higher than it is due to the open vista to the west. Once reaching the top, you are rewarded with panoramic views across much of the west and moorland. The route then leads through an old Stone Age, Stone Circle settlement to Roos and Staple Tor. With the perception of distance playing a trick, the Tors appear a long way away. Then dropping down to a leat, past Merrivale Quarry (disused), and making the way back following the leat to Windy Cross before reaching the start. With the start point being visible for much of the walk, the temptation to shorten a planned route becomes willpower.

(S/E) Start from the car park, W3W >>> head north up to the top of Cox Tor; there is a well-worth path to the top, not designated.

Escape Route: (1) to (3) head south to main road B3357, The Quarryman's Path runs from halfway between (1) and (2) and from (3) past the quarry to the road.

(1) At the top of Cox Tor, looking east, there will be two distinct tors. Between the two tors, and Cox Tor is a depression in the ground, the Ordnance Survey map shows a water feature; however, this is seasonal and may dry up. The route heads northeast, heading to the left of the water feature. The hill dips, and the Stone Age hut circle settlement is on the left bank, looking north. The route contours around the top of the valley and continues to climb up to the top of Roos Tor.

(2) The route follows a southwest direction to Great Staple Tor, the first tor, and continues to Middle Staple Tor.

Escape Route: After leaving (3), follow the Quarryman's Path passed the unfenced disused quarry to the roate, alternatively continue to follow onto (4) and follow the track out to the main road, as described in (4).

(3) Head east, be mindful of clitter, a rocky area with no designated paths through. There can be divots or holes, and the rocks are slippery when wet, crossing the stream that feeds into the old quarry. If the stream is too wide to cross, follow the stream downstream towards the quarry; a footbridge is located there. Continue east to the Shillapark Farm track (4).

(4) Head south along the farm track, and out past the disused quarry, if exploring the quarry, the quarry pit is deep and flooded, be mindful near the edge, to the junction with the B3357, at this point, a stream/leat will go under the road. Crossing the road and handrail the The Sortridge and Grimstone leat. The leat will follow the contours of the land.

(5) Known locally as 'the windy post' heading north along a well-trodden path, this is not a designated path the car park (S/E).
