The start is at the sports ground at the top of Ribeauvillé (take Rue Klee then Rue de Lutzelbach uphill to the small car park where you can park, but which fills up quickly. If so, park on Rue Klee or at the bottom of the town).
(S/E) Leave the car park via the track running alongside the sports ground, pass the orientation map, continue to the right of the sign and head due north into the Vallon du Lutzelbach. Follow the track along the stream without changing direction.
(1) Walk past the Lutzelbach Fountain. Shortly after the fountain, the path makes a hairpin bend to the right and leaves the stream bank.
(2) At the next junction, do not head towards Schluesselstein, but turn left and stay on the red-white-red marked route towards Taennchel Trois châteaux (variant ofthe GR®®).
You’ll reach a spot offering a lovely view of the valley and the rear of Haut-Ribeaupierre. You’ll cross theGR®®5, which comes from Thannenkirch on your right and branches off after 50 metres on your left towards the Three Castles at the Carrefour des Quatre Chênes.
(3) Continue straight on to a picnic table offering a lovely view of the Taennchel. You can take a break here or walk a few dozen metres to see the Croix du Dusenbach (stone wayside cross).
(4) At the picnic table, turn left at a right angle, following the red-white-red markings which lead to the castles. Please note: leave the track after about 300 metres and take a path to the left. Follow the path through the woods. Cross a track and continue straight ahead.
(5) You’ll reach a crossroads where you can either climb up to Haut-Ribeaupierre (marked with a Red Rectangle; take the path straight ahead) or bypass it (marked with red-white-red signs) to the right. My route chooses to bypass the castle, but it’s not a major detour to visit it.
A fairly steep path takes us to the largest of the three castles: Saint-Ulrich.
(6) Here we join theGR®®5, which descends from Haut-Ribeaupierre. You can visit this castle, which has been well restored and offers a magnificent view of the valley.
From here, it takes just a few minutes to visit thethird castle: Girsberg. Then, return to Saint-Ulrich and head down towards Ribeauvillé along a very steep path (GR®®5).
(7) Pass by a gazebo where you can take a break. When you reach the back of the school, turn left onto the concrete-paved path which leads back to the car park (S/E).
