Walk at Port d'Aziré

This is an easy, short walk that allows you to discover the wild side of the Green Venice. In the heart of nature, you will always be close to the water, in the shade of pollarded ash trees and poplars. And you may even be lucky enough to spot some nutria or deer.

Description of the walk

Park in the Port d'Aziré car park in the commune of Benet.

(S/E) Leave the car park and walk around the port to join the path that runs along the left bank of the Rigole d'Aziré.

(1) After about 400 metres, take a path on the left. Go around the ponds of the old fishery and then return to the path that runs along the Rigole d'Aziré. Take it to the left.

(2) Cross the Rigole using the chain boat called Rosalie, then turn right on the other bank.

After the small bridge, turn left onto a small wooden footbridge (ignore the yellow markings) and follow the path that runs alongside the inlet. Watch out for exposed roots and nutria holes. A little further on, leave this path and turn right onto another small footbridge, then continue along the path which crosses several more small footbridges and joins the path that runs along the right bank of the Rigole d'Aziré

(3). Continue to the left to return to Port d'Aziré (S/E)

  2. 1 : km 0.43 - alt. 2 m - Path on the left
  3. 2 : km 1.09 - alt. 3 m - Chain boat

Notes

As with all marsh trails, some sections may be very wet or even flooded during the rainy season.

At the point (1), the trail is currently blocked by branches (October 2025), as is the other end on the way back to the canal. It is impossible to pass through to the fishery. Continue straight ahead along the canal.

Alternative route: At the point (2), you can continue to the Pont de Sainte-Christine bridge and then return via the other bank of the Rigole d'Aziré, which is about 2.50 km further.

Picnic area and dry toilets at Port d'Aziré and Pont de Sainte-Christine (if you opt for the alternative route).

Worth a visit

Throughout this hike, you can enjoy:

- The clear waters of Port d'Aziré, where you can observe fish.
- The restored old wash house in Aziré.
- The old Aziré fishery.
- The chain boat "Rosalie" (named after the protected insect Rosalie des Alpes, found in the Marais Poitevin)
- The pollarded ash trees and poplars, as well as a wide variety of flowering plants depending on the season.
- Nutria, deer and various birds, depending on the time of day and how quiet you are.

A short, shaded walk. Very pleasant.
Children really enjoy the chain boat crossing.

A perfect little walk to introduce young children to walking or hiking.
We went back today for the second time, and the children were delighted to see the route in autumn.
Thank you for putting this route here!
