Around the Saint-Louis-Arzwiller Inclined Plane

A beautiful circular route offering the chance to discover the Saint-Louis-Artzwiller Inclined Plane, the Rocher du Calice and the Vallée des Éclusiers. Part of the walk takes place in the forest along forest tracks and beautiful paths, where you’ll discover fantastic and unique rock formations, a magnificent rocky outcrop, a typical Moselle village, and a picturesque stretch of the old canal better known as the ‘Vallée des Éclusiers’ with its old locks, now out of service. The Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane, a boat lift unique in Europe built in 1969, replaced the seventeen locks of the old Marne-Rhine Canal. It forms part of the Marne-Rhine Canal, enabling passage through the Vosges, and is one of the most visited river sites in France.

Description of the walk

Park in car park P3 at the bottom of the Plan Incliné.

(S/E) Head up from the car park via a path with wooden steps, between the road on the left and the summer toboggan run on the right. Continue to the Plan Incliné tourist road.

(1) Follow this road to the right for about 400 m, leaving the site entrance on your right.

(2) Further on, at the slight left-hand bend, take the forest path (Route des Éclusiers GR®532) which winds sharply to the left and leads to the Rocher du Calice: marked with a Yellow Disc and a Blue Ring.

(3) Leave the forest track and take the path downhill to the left: Yellow Ring. Reach the Rocher du Calice;at the end of the path, beneath the rocks, there is a bench from which to enjoy the view over the valley.

(4) Walk back a few metres and take the path down to the right. Continue along the path halfway up the slope, more or less parallel to a forest track and alongside a conglomerate rock outcrop. Cross a stream via a small wooden bridge and continue towards the Trois Bacs wash house (Éclusiers GR®532 route then Plan Incliné circular route): Blue Ring markings. Reach the wash house, where several tables and benches and a covered shelter provide a spot for a lunch break.

(5) Continue and climb a short way to reach a tarmac forest track. Follow it to the left until the next T-junction.

(6) Turn sharply right uphill to reach a picnic area. This area is on the leftjust before you reach the village and features numerous benches and shelters. A large barbecue is also available.

(7) Continue uphill towards Saint-Louis, a typical Lorraine village.

(8) Continue right along Rue du Dix-Huit Juin, crossing the village to the church and the town hall: follow the Blue Ring signs.

(9) Turn left ontoRue de la Gare. You are now on the Circulaire du Plan Incliné. Follow the road down into the valley: Blue Ring signposting.

(10) Pass through a lit tunnel under the new canal and emerge onto the D98 almost opposite the old Arzviller station: Blue Ring signposting. Turn left with care along the road, cross the road bridge over the railway line and continue to the small car park.

(11) Take the path branching off to the right, then follow the path to the right leading to lock no. 2. Then follow the towpath of the old canal to lock 13: Blue Ring signposting.

(12) About twenty metres past this lock, take the path down to the right which runs alongside the Teigelbach stream and passes under the railway line. Then cross the stream and rejoin the road.

(13) Cross with care and take the path opposite that leads uphill to a second underpass beneath the new canal. At the exit of this tunnel, after a short climb, rejoin the tourist route near a junction you passed on the way there.

(14) Head down to the left along this road and pass the site entrance again.

(1) Turn left and, following the route in reverse to the outward journey, rejoin the (S/E).

Tour completed with a group of 20 people, average age 72.
Very pleasant and varied, but too much tarmac. The final climb after the tunnel under the canal was very challenging.
We took a different route after the railway bridge, before point 11, turning left towards the railway tunnel, then continuing to the river tunnel before returning via the lock keepers' valley.

A lovely, varied route. We went round in circles at the start because we weren’t in the right car park (P3). Once on the route, you simply need to follow the circular loop marked by the Club Vosgien’s blue circle. (The instructions to turn right or left don’t seem very reliable to me.) Highly recommended route.
