Haselbourg circular, via Saint-Fridolin and Falkenfels

A beautiful hike to Haselbourg/Heller, in the Dabo region, starting from the Plan Incliné car park in Saint-Louis, passing by the Saint-Fridolin Chapel, named after an Irish monk, and its baptistery. Continue on to the cave dwellings of Falkenberg and the Rocher des Faucons, with a beautiful view of Dabo. In Haselbourg, a picturesque village, the main street circles the Roman camp. Return along the Zorn, on the left bank, on the unmarked "CV" path. The path is not difficult, but a map or GPS is recommended. Upon arrival, you can also visit the Lerher crystal factory.

Description of the walk

Parking available at the Plan Incliné de Saint-Louis car park on the D97b.

(S/E) Cross the Zorn and join the D98C.

(1) Walk carefully on the right-hand side of the road towards Sparsbrod for about 200 metres.

(2) Cross and take the path marked with a yellow rectangle on the left. Be careful not to miss the poorly marked path on the right, which descends in the opposite direction.

(3) Follow this path and rejoin the road at the exit of Sparsbrod.

(4) Turn left and walk along the left-hand side of the road for about 150 metres, taking the same care. Then take the small tarmac road marked with a yellow ring on the left: there is very little traffic. You will reach Saint-Fridolin Chapel.

(5) After a possible stop, take the stairs on the right, keeping to the Yellow Ring markings, then the uphill path.

(6) Cross the forest road, take the path opposite and continue uphill, first with a few hairpin bends and then more straight ahead, to reach the junction with the D98d in Falkenberg.

(7) Take the small, fairly steep tarmac road opposite, marked with yellow and red rings, which continues as a forest road.

(8) Turn right towards Falkenfelsen, onto a small, inconspicuous path, and begin a beautiful climb towards the rock: visit the cave dwellings.

(9) Climb above the rock, following the double markings of the Yellow Ring and Red Disc, and arrive at Haselbourg.

(10) Turn onto the main street opposite and continue along it through the village, going all the way around the old Roman camp.

(11) Take the path marked with a yellow ring on the right, which descends steeply and leads to the departmental road at a place called NeustadtMulhe.

(12) Carefully cross the departmental road at the protected crossing, then cross the Zorn river and take the small path on the right: from this point onwards, the paths are no longer marked.

(13) Cross the D45 and take the path opposite, following the left bank of the Zorn.

(14) Keep to the right at this junction, then make a hairpin turn to the left, followed by another turn to the right, to pass by the factory.

(15) Walk along the meadow and stay at the edge of the woods, with the Zorn on your right. Pass the confluence of the Ruisseau de Heyerst and the Zorn, keeping to the path that makes a first turn left then right, and walk for about 400 metres.

(16) Turn right to cross the stream, then right again to reach the water reservoir junction.

(17) Take the forest road on the left and return to the car park where you started (S/E).

An interesting route allowing you to discover an unusual chapel, a cave dwelling and the beautiful village of Haselbourg, situated high up with panoramic views of the surrounding forests.
Stop off at the Schreiber restaurant for a bite to eat in a cosy setting.
