Around the Pech de Rossignol

This route heads into the Grésigne forest via a wide forest track towards Sainte-Cécile du Cayrou to the south. It then returns through vineyards and fields towards Saint-Beauzile across undulating countryside criss-crossed by numerous streams.
A well-maintained wash house provides a useful shelter halfway along the route for a picnic in bad weather!

This walk is a longer version of the “Around Saint-Beauzile” walk published on Visorando.

Description of the walk

Park in the cemetery car park.

(S/E) Head north-west towards the Dalgues farm.

(1) Take the small road on the right for a short distance, then very quickly take the wide grassy path on the left. This path climbs gently towards the Mas de Lacroux.

(2) Turn right, walk past the Mas des Espagnols and join theGRP®: red and yellow markings.
Continue straight on, heading north-west.

(3) At a place called Les Bruguettes, turn left and follow theGRP® which climbs through the Grésigne forest towards the Pas de Caillaret. Head back down towards the Baronne forest road, still following theGRP® markings. The route shown on the map does not correspond to the actual terrain.

(4) At the junction with the forest road, follow it left towards the south: yellowPR® markings. Reach the D8.

(5) Follow it to the left, leaving the turn-off to the right for the church of Sainte-Cécile du Cayrou.

(6) Just before a small lake, leave the road and take a path on the right, cross the embankment and head slightly uphill.

(7) Turn left onto a path that follows the stream towards the wash house. This part of the route is an optional detour but a great spot for a picnic!

(7) On your way back from the wash house, head left up towards the vineyards. Pass in front of Sirvens then follow the road (or the edge of the vineyards) to reach Les Brus.

(8) Head briefly down the road to the right, then turn left, passing in front of the town hall of Sainte-Cécile du Cayrou. Continue along the path to Les Gaillagous, then cross over.

(9) As you leave Les Gaillagous, turn left onto the road then immediately right onto a grassy path that descends through the fields. This path curves as it climbs back up towards the road and offers a lovely view in the distance of the bastide of Castelnau-de-Montmiral.

(10) Once on the road, turn left then immediately right at a small bridge over the ditch towards the vineyards. Follow a path down through the vineyards.

(11) Follow the road to the right, cross the Ruisseau d'Escandérou and head back up towards Laval. You will rejoin the GRP® markings.

(12) Leave the road and take a narrow path that climbs to the left.

(13) At the top of the path, follow the ridge road to the right, then head down to the left towards the Escourou farm and cross the stream of the same name.

(14) After the bridge, turn left onto a stony path that climbs up the valley and joins a tarmac road.

(15) Follow it to the right, heading back up towards the village of Saint-Beauzile. Walk through the village, past the church, ignore a road on the right, and continue straight on, descending slightly.

(16) Take a grassy path on the left which leads straight down to the cemetery (S/E).

A nice hike. It goes up and down
Took exactly 3 hours. So the estimated time for the walk is overestimated… but I’d anticipated that even before setting off.
Very muddy in winter, though.

Hello

A pleasant walk with beautiful scenery, but a bit too many tarmac roads
An issue already reported but still ongoing: access through the vineyards at No. 9 (Gaillagous) is still prohibited by the owner. You must stay on the road

Best regards
Michel

A field closed off by the owner; had to take a detour via the road; otherwise, everything was fine.

Hi,

We did this circular loop on mountain bikes; it’s great.

It’s easy going except at the end of the descent from Pas de Caillaret (waypoint 4)

Thanks to the trail markers

, In other words, to avoid walking on the tarmac.
But in this instance we were violently attacked and there was no other option.
That said, it is true that very often we walk along paths on numbered plots, which are therefore private
I do try to be careful, but it’s often impossible to do otherwise.
Fortunately, the majority of landowners are much more understanding!
Kind regards.

Hello,

I chose to walk between points 9 and 10 along this wide grassy path between the cereal fields to avoid walking on the tarmac, which is always a concern of mine.

If there are no signs saying ‘Private Property’ or ‘No Pedestrians’, which is the case here, I go for it!

The same goes for the vineyard paths after point 10!

I used to be a farmer and I’ve always thought that the paths between the fields are meant for walking! Especially in winter!

What’s more, this detour offers a great view of the bastide of Castelnau de Montmiral!

I don’t think we should give in to the abuse of property rights, especially as local paths are sometimes unduly privatised!

As for the name of the locality, OK for Rouyré at point 9.

Have a good day!

Hello,

A lovely walk, especially in good weather!
But there’s a big problem at point 9 (it’s not Gaillagous but Rouyré; Gaillagous is further away, 300m on!) From this point to point 10, it’s private land, and we were rudely turned away by the owner; we had to turn back and take the tarmac road via Gaillagous (it’s shorter and flatter).
I checked on Géoportail, and the path (which is very wide) is registered as private property!
So I’ve amended the route for next time.
No other issues to report
Best regards
