Description of the walk

Starting from Pont-Sainte-Maxence station.

(S/E) Leaving the station, take Rue de la Paix opposite and continue straight on to the banks of the Oise via Rue du Chancelier Guérin. Turn left and head for the bridge over the Oise.

(1) Cross the bridge over the river. Cross at the pedestrian crossing, then turn left and follow the Oise (D123). Cross at the pedestrian crossing and take Rue Saint-Armand, turning your back on the Oise. At the junction, turn left towards Moncel Abbey via Rue Philippe de Beaumanoir, followed by Rue de l’Oise.

(2) Once you reach Moncel Abbey, cross the road and take the street leading uphill to the right, Chaussée Pontpoint. At the next junction, turn left onto Rue de Crépy. Continue along the path at the end of the street and keep going straight on.

(3) Do not take the path leading down through the fields, but turn right instead. Continue up the path until you reach the Poteau de la Croix Frapotel.

(4) Turn right onto the tarmac road, Route de la Croix Frapotel. After 200m, take the path on the right which starts behind a wooden gate (markedGR®) and leads into the woodland. Then turn left onto the forest track (GR®).

(5) At the crossroads, leave theGR® and turn right onto the forest track, leaving plot 17 on your right. Walk past the Maison Forestière des Falaises and follow the edge of the field. Go through the gate and continue straight ahead along the forest path.

(6) At the crossroads, turn left for a round trip to Mont Calipet; stay on the main path until you reach the mill ruins and the limestone grasslands further on.

(7) Retrace your steps to find the path leading back down to the abbey.

(6) Turn left and continue straight on downhill to rejoin Rue Chaussée Pontpoint, then carry on straight ahead to reach the abbey.

(2) To reach the station, turn left towards the town centre via Rue Philippe de Beaumanoir and Rue Henri Bodchon.

(8) Turn right onto Rue Charles Lescot and head towards the banks of the Oise. Follow the same route as on the way there to reach the station (S/E).

A very pleasant walk if you ‘forget’ the urban section at the start (and therefore at the end), which isn’t particularly interesting. Perhaps the route could be altered.

Walking through Pont Saint Maxence amidst fairly heavy traffic is of little interest, and I think it would be better to start directly from Moncel Abbey (which is well worth a visit). The fairly undulating terrain and varied scenery make for a rather pleasant walk. The route gets quite busy in its final section, towards the ruins of the mill.
Please note: before point 5, make sure you recognise the junction mentioned. We turned off too early, at a small crossroads, and then had to retrace our steps to reach the correct junction a few hundred metres further along the GR (at plot 17 as indicated).
Otherwise, the description is spot on – many thanks to the author!

Hello, thank you for this route, which I combined with the FFRP guide’s Route No. 58 around Paris, which follows the path as far as Mont Pagnotte, all topped off with a visit to the Royal Abbey of Moncel – it makes for a magnificent hike. The Halatte Forest is truly superb; I saw two roe deer, a great spotted woodpecker and a nuthatch.
I met a really friendly and knowledgeable forest ranger who explained a lot about how the forest is managed. I was out on a recce and will be taking a group there in September. The only hassle: you have to book train tickets online to get the cheapest fare – 2 x 4 euros by choosing the ‘discounted’ timetables, which means you’re stuck with the chosen timetable as they’re non-exchangeable. Thanks again.
