A grand tour of the Halatte State Forest

This hike is long enough to showcase all aspects of the Halatte forest: tall beech and oak trees, coppice with oak trees and lime trees in the undergrowth, and large cultivated clearings, the largest of which is Fleurines. Most of the route follows the beautiful forest roads that were built several centuries ago.

Description of the walk

Departure

The hike starts at the small car park located along Rue de Verneuil in the village of Fleurines (Oise).

Follow Rue de Verneuil westwards. It turns left in front of the gymnasium.
At the end of the bend, turn left onto the wide forest road (plot 193).
Follow this road to the Auteuil signpost and continue straight ahead towards the Déroute signpost.
About 200 metres before you reach the Déroute signpost, you will come across aGR® marked path on your right. TheGR® turns and now follows the forest road in front of you.

GR® markings (red and white)

Continue straight ahead on the forest road.
Cross the Déroute crossroads and continue along the Auteuil forest road, which climbs uphill.
Go to the second crossroads, at the corner of plot 268. TheGR® turns left.

PR® markings (yellow)

(1) Continue straight ahead. The road is markedPR® from here. This is recent and does not correspond to the IGN map.
At the next crossroads, stay on the forest road which turns right and winds its way along an area undergoing regeneration. The forest road is very wide and clear, so it is easy to distinguish from the paths and tracks that cross it.
At the corner of plot 273, thePR® turns right onto a path.

No markings

(2) Take the forest road (second on the right). It is passable by vehicle, and you can see two wheel tracks separated by a strip of grass. Continue across plot 274 until you reach a crossroads where the road is blocked by a row of boulders

(3) Turn right onto the wide path leading straight to the edge of the forest, into a large cultivated field.
As you cross the field, you can see the facilities at the end of the Creil aerodrome runways in the distance on your left.
.

(4) Continue straight ahead at the Swiss crossroads. At the corner of the field, turn left, then immediately right to join the D565 in the hollow of a valley.
Cross the road and continue to the next crossroads, two hundred metres further on (you will see a sign prohibiting unauthorised vehicles)

(5) Turn onto the wide track on the left. Five hundred metres further on, you will come out of the forest into a very large cultivated clearing, which you cross to reach a small tarmac road.

(6) Take the tarmac road on the right for 200 metres, then, at the fork, continue straight ahead on the track.
It crosses meadows where horses can often be seen, then passes under cover and runs alongside the fence of a quarry area.
After this quarry area, the track descends to join a tarmac road near a pond.

(7) Turn right, then right again at the junction with Rue de Verdun and continue along this road until you reach the restaurant "Le Marronnier".

(8) Turn right onto Rue des Placeaux, which climbs up the hillside. At the top of the hill, at the fork, continue to the left. You will come out into a large cultivated clearing, which you cross to go straight ahead to a crossroads at the corner of plots 125 and 158.

(9) Turn left and follow this path to the Croix des Veneurs (it is made of stone).

(10) Continue slightly diagonally to the right, passing between plots 46 and 47.

(11) At the crossroads, at the corner of plot 45, take the path diagonally to the left down into the valley. After a right-hand bend, it joins a crossroads with a forest road. Cross it and climb back up to the plateau via the very steep path in front of you. It leads to a GR® marked trail. The red and white markings are old and faded at this point.

GR® markings (red and white)

(12) Turn left. The path turns right after a hundred metres, then right again after another hundred metres. It then makes a semi-circle to the left to go around the top of a very steep valley. Continue, then, after a first right-hand bend followed by a second left-hand bend on a downhill section, at the corner of plot 41, turn right onto the path that begins between this plot and plot 38.

No markings

(13) The path first climbs steeply before descending into a hollow, then, after climbing back up to the plateau, becomes almost horizontal. Go to the Poteau de la Mare aux Oiseaux (the sign has disappeared) and continue straight on towards the Carrefour du Triangle, located at the junction of plots 75 and 115.

(14) At Carrefour du Triangle, turn left onto the forest road between plots 75 and 115.
You will arrive at the D1017. Cross it and continue to the path that begins between plots 111 and 113.

(15) Turn right onto this path, which will take you about 300 metres further to the Obelisk of the King of Rome, standing on a small hill.

(16) From the obelisk, follow the path, which is not very visible in the vegetation, leading you to the Fontaine des Lys fountain, about a hundred metres further south.

(17) After seeing the fountain, turn right onto the path heading west. After 400 metres, it joins a forest road, which you follow to the right for about 50 metres.

(18) At the right-hand bend in this road, turn left onto the path that leads to a tarmac road running alongside the fence of an industrial estate.
Turn right onto this road and continue to the D1017. Cross this road and continue left, walking along its wide grassy verge until you reach the "Valois-Emballages" warehouses.

(19) Turn right and then right again 100 metres further on into the farm track.
It turns left after a hundred metres and crosses meadows and fields. At the crossroads, in front of a hedge of tall trees and shrubs, turn right. The track turns left a little further on and joins a small tarmac road, which you follow to the left for about 100 metres before turning right again onto a farm track that leads to a crossroads near the Fleurines water treatment plant.

(20) Turn left onto the track that takes you to the D565 near the car park, the starting point of this hike.

The hike is now complete.

A very beautiful, varied and uncrowded hike.
Only the very end (1-2 km) is of little interest, but you have to get back to the car :-)

Very beautiful hike, but mark the route with plot numbers! Good luck in the thick vegetation!
Beautiful pond in Verneuil and very pretty wash house
Be careful at the end of the route, as I think it's the most difficult part in my opinion
Thanks again

A beautiful hike at the beginning of autumn. The route is mainly through forest.
Be careful between points 4 and 5 in the field, as vegetation has covered the path, which, on the map, heads further west. You leave this field on the D 565; simply take the road on the left for 100 metres and, at the bend in the road, you will find the route again (Route des Coquins).

A fairly easy route, ideal for heritage days, with an original water tower and Roman ruins.

A pleasant hike in the sunshine.
Beautiful paths but also a few climbs.
It's a shame that the plot numbers aren't shown on the Visorando map, as they can sometimes be useful for finding your way around, even if they're not always easy to find on the ground. I should have photocopied the IGN map and marked the route on it.
For your information, the plaque on the post at the Mare aux Oiseaux has been replaced.

Good evening,
We have just completed the course with a group of Nordic walkers. Everyone really enjoyed the diversity of the terrain, the wide paths for picking up speed, the narrow trails and even the very steep climbs.
Despite the heavy rain this week (the zouave is waist-deep in water), there are very few muddy areas.
We look forward to doing it again in another season.
