Description of the walk

Start from Villers-Saint-Frambourg, to the north-east of the village, at the end of Rue de la Croix Dupille (at the bend on the right). Park in the street or an adjacent street.

(S/E) Head north-west along a pleasant path, keeping the houses on your left. Ignore the turnings to the left.

(1) Pass through a gate and take thefirst path on the right (Chemin du Cheval Blanc), which climbs towards the forest. Enter the forest and continue straight on.

(2) At the junction, turn right onto Route Cammomie. Walk uphill for about 600 m.

(3) At the crossroads, turn left onto Route des Dames. Continue straight on to Poteau des Dames (note a fountain on the right as you pass).

(4) At the Poteau des Dames, follow Route du Cerfouillet to the left (GR®12and the Way of St James). After a slight climb, head back down to reach a junction.

(5) Turn right onto the Chemin du Cheval Blanc (leaving theGR®12). After a few dozen metres, you will find the Rocher au Sanglier on the right. Continue north-north-west along the main path. After about 250 m, turn left, still following the Chemin du Cheval Blanc. Cross a road and continue straight ahead for about a hundred metres.

(6) Turn left off the path and you will immediately come to the Dolmen de Chancey, which is simply a discreet upright stone. Retrace your steps.

(6) Continue north-west along the Chemin du Cheval Blanc. Go straight on at the various junctions until you reach a T-junction.

(7) Follow the track to the right, the Route du Grand Maître. At the signpost of the same name, cross a tarmac road and continue straight ahead. Climb steeply up to the Poteau du Mont Pagnotte (crossing a tarmac road on the way).

(8) At the Mont Pagnotte signpost, take thesecond left, the Route du Mont Pagnotte, a path that descends.

(9) At the next junction, follow a path on the left which quickly leads to the Fontaine du Pied Dufaux, on the right in the undergrowth. Turn back.

(9) Follow a path straight ahead. After about 150 m, at a fork, turn right.

(10) At the junction with a tarmac road (antenna, pylon), turn left. Stay along the edge of the plateau, heading due east then east-southeast, and ignore all side paths.

(11) At the Carrefour du Haut Merdun, follow the Chemin de Saint-Jacques (GR®12) to the left.

(12) At the Chatillon crossroads, continue straight on, heading due east, for about 700 m.

(13) At the junction, continue straight on (let theGR®12turn right). After about 150 m, turn left off the path into the clearing (thinned-out forest). Walk downhill for about 100 metres to reach the Fontaine Saint-Barthélémy. Retrace your steps.

(13) Continue straight on to the Carrefour Chatillon.

(12) Then turn left onto a wide path. Stay on this path until you reach the Poteau d'Yvillers, ignoring all side paths.

(14) Continue straight on (west) and turn immediately right to find the Fontaine D'Yvillers. Retrace your steps to the Poteau d'Yvillers.

(14) At the Yvillers signpost, take the Cammomie road south-west and return to the junction you passed at the start of the walk.

(3) Continue straight on for about 600 m and go downhill.

(2) Turn left.

(1) Turn left and pass through a gate you saw on the way out to return to the starting point.

(S/E) For those wishing to see Fontaine Auber, take a path up to the left (north).

(15) At the fork, veer left and head up between the fields towards the forest. Further on, head into a small wood and you will soon reach the fountain.

(16) Retrace your steps back to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Since the time of Clovis, the forest has been a favourite hunting ground for the Kings of France. Royal Forest: these are ancient fountains built by the Capetian kings in the 17th and 18th centuries to provide water for game, hunting packs and, at times, nearby villages. There are around fifteen of them scattered throughout the forest.
The Chancy Dolmen, or ‘Cheval blanc’, bears witness to human presence since the Neolithic period. Finally, the Rocher au Sanglier, an anonymous contemporary work, adds a touch of colour to the route.

Worth a visit

A full-day hike with a lunch break at Mont Pagnotte. Bear in mind that this hike may take longer depending on the breaks you take at each point of interest. As the beautiful Fontaine Aubert is no longer accessible from the forest, you can set off again from the start/finish point of this circular hike to find it, which adds 2.4 km to the hike.

We couldn’t find the fountain near point 9 (even after following the two small paths that lead off to the left).
The description should be more precise.
To reach the Aubert fountain, it is perfectly possible to take the Aubert fountain path (between points 14 and 3) and, at its end, cross a fallow field for about 50 metres to reach point 16 (there is already a track showing that this route is quite well used).
We didn’t do the round trip to point 13.

After that, the forest is magnificent, with some beautiful high forests.

We found only three fountains, the dolmen—well hidden by the vegetation—and the wild boar rock.
At point 9, I followed a track through tall ferns, but there was no sign of the Pied Dufaux fountain; yet it must have been the right path, as when we turned back to take the path opposite, we arrived at the pylon.
At point 13, it was difficult to judge the 150 metres needed to enter the clearing. The brambles had reclaimed the area. We followed clearer ruts but didn’t reach the Saint Barthélémy fountain.
A pleasant surprise at the Yvilliers fountain, where fresh water was flowing abundantly. A mountain biker filling his water bottle told us it was drinkable despite the warning sign, but I didn’t try it.
We set off again from the starting point to reach the Auber fountain, which was overgrown with brambles.
Two points to note:
- at point 1, the path on the right is signposted ‘Chemin des Vaches’
- at point 11, the Chemin de Saint Jacques is number 655, not 12, which makes no difference to the route.

Thanks for the route, even if it gets a bit dodgy from point 14 onwards. Found a car park near the church.

Thank you and well done for your comment; it’s great that you took the shortcut through the edge of the forest, which I couldn’t officially recommend… as that route crosses private land where access has been fenced off over time. And I’m delighted to help people discover this forest heritage, which bears witness to the rich history of the beautiful Halatte Forest. You can follow my forays into the wilderness, including in Halatte, on Instagram @cheminsauvage

We went for a walk on the last Monday in September, just before the start of the hunting season – phew!
It was very peaceful, a real pleasure. A few fairly steep climbs, but no real difficulties.
The hunt for the fountains adds a bit of suspense; don’t look at the photos before the walk to spice up the search a bit: they’re all very different.
Towards the end, just past point 14, I took the ‘Chemin de la Fontaine Aubert’: once I reached the edge of the forest, I crossed a small meadow (a path marked out in the grass) and, as I entered the undergrowth again, I quickly found point 16 and the last fountain.
I then returned to the start via point 15. There were no gates or barbed wire to cross on this shortcut between 14 and 16, although I understood that this path is supposed to be closed.
At the start, it’s difficult to park as the street is narrow. There are a few rare parking spaces near the Town Hall, 300m away.
Thank you very much for this route!

Yes, for some fountains it’s a bit like the Holy Grail – a little bit of a micro-adventure in the forest. (Indiana Jones and Lara Croft have found them all.)

A lovely walk, though it wasn't always easy to find the fountains because of the dense vegetation
Thank you
