Around Saint-Lormel

Between the Arguenon and the Guébriand, you’ll discover the banks of an estuary, a windmill, small villages that have retained all their charm, a chapel, an old church, its calvary and its yew tree. Castles hidden away in lush greenery will emerge as you round a bend in the woods.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the stadium or the cemetery.

(S/E) Turn left onto Rue des Tilleuls as you leave Allée du Stade. After walking about a hundred metres, turn left into the narrow passage between the houses. This leads to a crossroads.

(1) At the crossroads, turn left into the lane lined with oak trees and then chestnut trees. Continue to the end of Rue Bonne Église. At the end, turn right until you reach the first path running alongside a wall. This is the starting point for the “Grande Marée” variant.

(2) Walk along the right-hand side of the wall of the property where the Chapelle Saint-Pierre is located and continue to the Arguenon. Walk along the river for 2 km through the marshland to the Givière crossroads.
.
(3) Leave the banks of the Arguenon by turning left and head towards the hamlet of La Vallée.

(4) Take the road on the right. Pass in front of the Hôtel Malard and continue towards Bellenray.

(5) At the entrance to Bellenray, take the road on the right and head towards Le Tertre, then Le Perron.

(6) After Le Perron, turn right at the crossroads onto the road leading towards La Guérande. At the Y-junction, turn left to quickly reach the RD19. Follow it to the right for a few metres until you reach a path junction.

(7) Turn left onto it, follow the Guébriand stream, cross it via the small bridge on the left and continue along the path that runs alongside it, more or less closely, until you reach Ville Mauvoisin.

(8) Take the road on the right, which leads onto a grassy track; pass the old windmill and continue to the stony track.

(9) Turn right onto the sunken track. Follow it to the road.

(10) Turn sharply left onto this road and head towards Ville Bily.

(11) Turn sharply right, then left to rejoin the D19.

(12) Take the path on the right that runs alongside the D19, then Rue Saint Pierre. Cross the village, continuing along Rue des Tilleuls. At the junction with Allée du Stade, which leads to the car park, leave it on your left and continue straight on.
Head for the junction leading to Le Tertre. Go straight ahead to reach this neighbourhood and, further on, the enclosure and the church of Le Vieux Bourg:

(13) Retrace your steps along this route until you reach the junction with Allée du Stade. Turn right here and head back to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

There are two sets of markings on this walk: green and white (pale) and red and white for theGR® section. The condition of the markings is average.

There are toilets at the starting point. Next to the old church, there are tables for a picnic and dry toilets are located in the enclosure.

Apart from the section along the Arguenon, which can be slippery, the walk follows only small stony or tarmac roads and pretty little paths. Make sure you wear good walking shoes for the section along the Arguenon.

Take care at high tide; take the less picturesque alternative route, starting from the departure point via Saint-Loyat, La Ville Briend and Chantepie, and rejoining the path at La Givière.

Worth a visit

Before taking the path down towards the Arguenon, you will pass the14th-century Saint-Pierre Chapel. It is situated on private property.

The old church of Saint-Lormel, with its churchyard, wayside cross and yew tree, all several hundred years old, is well worth a visit. As you enter or leave, pass by the ‘échalier’, a stone blocking the entrance to the enclosure. This stone had two functions: the first was to prevent stray pigs from rooting around in the cemetery, and the second, according to legend, was to prevent the souls of the dead from leaving the cemetery to haunt the realm of the living

There is a geocaching cache on the route.

Plancoët is well worth a visit, as is the Château du Guildo in Créhen. A little further on, from Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer, you can catch a glimpse of the Île des Hébiens.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Coming across a confluence is a rare occurrence...
The bed of the Arguenon, a bird’s-eye view of Guévriand and a stretch of flat land... enough to delight any walker.

Watch out for the tides – some sections will be slippery: waterproof footwear is essential.

Hello,

The waymarking does not depend on either the author or Visorando.

Visorando does not recommend relying on signposting as this can be altered or removed... whereas the terrain features provide consistent information.

Visorando provides a detailed description and a 1:25,000 IGN map. And, if you have any difficulty finding your way, Visorando offers a free virtual wayfinding tool: a GPS app.

See you soon

Hello.
A lovely walk, enjoyed in glorious sunshine in early April. Very pleasant along the Arguenon at low tide.
As for the signposting, no problems up to waypoint (10). There is no yellow sign to indicate the left turn towards the village of Bily.
