Around Paimpol via the footpaths

In Breton, "glaz" refers to a colour found in natural elements, between blue, green and grey. It accompanies us on this route. The grey of the granite houses at the start and the mudflats at low tide. The blue-green of the bay, depending on the weather and the tides, which can be admired from the Kerroc'h tower. After Paimpol, the seaside town, comes Paimpol, the vegetable garden. The green-grey of the cabbage and artichoke fields. The little paths take us back to the old town where we can stroll, refresh ourselves or enjoy a crêpe.

Description of the walk

Park in the Place de Bretagne car park.

(S/E) Head towards Rue de la Marne (towards Crédit Agricole), cross it using the pedestrian crossing on the right-hand side of the square. The small path opposite leads to a small coastal river: the Quinic. Cross the bridge, then turn left to follow it on the right-hand bank: be careful, as dogs are often walked on this path. Follow this sandy path until it reaches Place de la République.

(1) Continue straight ahead to reach the port, and walk along it as closely as possible, following Quai Morand, then Quai Pierre Loti. Before reaching the port, pass in front of the Tourist Office where you can pick up a map of Paimpol.

(2) Continue left on theGR®34, along the mudflats. Go around the small Kerpalud industrial area on the left, then take the path along the mudflats and join Rue de Traou an Aod.

(3) Continue to the right, then leave this street at the bend and follow the path to the right towards the Kerroc'h tower. At the foot of the hill, take a sharp left turn to climb up to the tower. Very quickly, a path climbs to the right and leads to the tower, where you can go up to the first floor.

(4) Descend the other side of the hill towards the car park, where you will find an information board. After the board, take the small road on the left and descend for about 200 metres.

(5) Be careful not to miss the small path that descends to the right and joins a road that you take to the left to find the path you took on the way up.

(3) Go up to the right via Rue de Traou an Aod until you reach the D789 (Ploubazlanec road), which you must cross with great care. Continue straight ahead towards Kersa High School (private castle), which is closed off by a large gate near a picnic table. To the right of this gate, there are two three-way junctions.

(6) Take the right-hand path, which joins Rue de la Cité Saint-Denis. Turn left onto this small road. In front of two small cubic buildings, turn left along a field onto a grassy path that enters a small wood. Cross a stream and continue along this path to the greenhouses. Take the road on the left (beware of large lorries), walk along the school until you reach the junction with the Route de Kersa.

(7) Turn left and then take the first right, Chemin des Lauriers. Stay on this small tarmac road until you reach Route de Loguivy (D15). Cross it carefully.

Take the small tarmac road opposite, slightly to the left, Chemin de la Fontaine. At the first junction, make the first turn right then left onto Traverse de Kerhorre. Go straight across the Ty Lann Kararzic junction.

(8) Turn right at the houses to go around the hill, following Chemin du Moulin de Kerarzic, which overlooks the vegetable fields.

(9) Shortly after a large left-hand bend, don't miss the path that branches off to the right, at the houses, before number 13. Stay on this path. In particular, do not turn left onto Rue de Kerglas, but continue straight ahead and follow the path to the end, which becomes Rue Garden-Zant Vignoc. Turn right at the first junction onto Rue Hent Kervig and follow it to the Lanvignec Chapel, which you will pass on your right.

(10) Turn left onto Rue Gardenn Toull ar Werzhid. At the swimming pool, take an elevated path that avoids the road to Boulevard Gabriel le Bras. Cross it (there are several 30 km/h zones and pedestrian crossings to make this crossing safe) and continue straight ahead to Rue de Pen an Run.

Cross it to take a small elevated path closed off by a bicycle chicane, which leads to the Leclerc shopping centre. Turn left onto Route de Kergrist to reach the protected crossing. Go around the roundabout on the right and continue straight on Rue Bécot. Between numbers 35 and 37, turn right onto Impasse de Biliou, then left onto Chemin de Biliou.

Finally, take the second right, Rue du Docteur Herviault, which leads back to Place de Bretagne and the car park (S/E).

Great route through the woods. I had to shorten the route a little due to lack of time, but I thoroughly enjoyed the tranquillity of the place and the incredible diversity of flora in the woods.

I agree, the first part is interesting, but the second part is much less so! It's not easy when you're at the Kerroc'h tower observation point (km 4) and want to continue on your way. Otherwise, there are no other difficulties!

Hike on 16/01/2020
At No. 3. There is only one path (it runs along the castle walls).
Do not look for a three-way junction

At No. 10, numbers 35 and 37 are adjoining... so I couldn't find Impasse Biliou...
I continued 200 metres along Rue Bécot until I found Rue Docteur Herviault on the right

Thank you.
