Around Labaroche, Le Cras and Petit Hohnack

Labaroche is a very large commune. This hike takes you around the upper part of the village, so the elevation gain is modest. The route is divided into two parts and goes around Le Cras and Petit Hohnack. The detour around Le Cras follows forest paths to the Herrenwasen pass.
This hike includes a few sections on small mountain roads and is particularly recommended in autumn when nature is ablaze with colour.

Description of the walk

Head to the car park in Labaroche Place, in front of the Musée des Métiers du Bois (Woodworking Museum).

(S/E) From the car park, turn right towards the Au Tilleul hotel and restaurant, then left.
Continue to the small street to the right of the restaurant that leads to Les Évaux.

(1) The road descends towards Labaroche-Évaux, marked with a blue disc.
After about 100 metres, at a three-way junction, leave the Évaux road and the blue disc markings and keep left, following the yellow cross markings (towards the chapel) to arrive shortly afterwards at the next junction.

(2) Keep right, the road becomes a path called Derrière La Roche, then after the last house, continue on a path that leads to the cemetery through a grove.

(3) Walk along the cemetery wall and continue along the road, still following the yellow cross markings, to reach the D11.1 and the large crossroads at the chapel.

(4) Head towards Ammerschwihr and follow the D11.1 for a few hundred metres until you reach a Y-junction.

(5) Turn left onto Chemin Henzelle towards Kaysersberg and the Herrenwasen pass.
The route now follows a forest path marked with blue rings and yellow crosses.

(6) Keep right to reach the Herrenwasen pass. At the pass, head towards Phimaroche, following the blue ring or blue triangle markings. At the fork, keep left and when you reach the hamlet, continue to the crossroads after the left-hand bend.

(7) At the Phimaroche crossroads, follow the path on the left which leads back to Labaroche. In places, the path is doubled by a Blue Triangle marked trail. The trail leads to the small Cras road overlooking the Val d'Orbey.

(8) At the crossroads of the Cras residence, near the cross, continue to the right to reach the crossroads before the stop sign. Near an electrical transformer, turn right, following the blue disc and green ring markings. In the left-hand bend that follows, continue on the road towards Moreyfontaine and reach a T-junction.

(9) Leave the Moreyfontaine road and turn left towards Labaroche Place, following the blue disc markings.

(10) Pass the hamlet of Le Faîte and you will come to a fork and a cross at the hamlet of Les Plains Champs. Keep left and you will find Labaroche Place near the Musée des Métiers du Bois (Woodworking Museum).

(1) Leave the museum on your right and continue towards Château du Hohnack, following the D11.1. After the right-hand bend, climb up the hairpin bend on the left via the small road that joins the D11.1 at a large crossroads with the Orbey road.

(11) Cross the Orbey road towards a small road leading up to "Les Cottis" (marked with yellow crosses towards Grand and Petit Hohnack and Croix de Wihr). At its end, the small road joins a crossroads near a cross at a place called Les Grandes Raies.

(12) Cross and continue straight on the small road that leads to La Trinque and the Lodges du Petit Hohnack, marked with a green ring and yellow cross. At the next crossroads, continue around Grand Hohnack towards Croix de Wihr until you reach a four-way crossroads.

(13) Turn right and follow the path that goes around Petit Hohnack until you reach a crossroads near a cross at Les Grandes Raies.

(14) Turn left onto the Chemin du Chêne, heading towards Le Bâa. Join the Route d'Orbey.

(15) Cross the Orbey road and immediately turn right to reach the car park of the Woodworking Museum (S/E).

Notes

There are two hotel restaurants on or near this route: Au Tilleul and La Rochette. You can also find places to eat in Labaroche-Place.
There are plenty of places to picnic, particularly at the Herrenwasen pass and the car park at the foot of the Petit-Hohnack.

Worth a visit

A visit to the Woodworking Museum is very interesting, especially if you take a guided tour.
The more adventurous can also climb the Petit Hohnack and visit the ruins, which are not visible from the car park between the two Hohnacks.

Hello,
A beautiful hike with stunning views. The only downside was a little too much tarmac for my liking, but that was mentioned in the description. We changed the route slightly, doing a circular hike from the Herrenwasen pass to pass by the Jean Weibel chalet, which is superbly equipped for picnics. When we got back to the pass, my brother realised he had lost his sunglasses, so we retraced our steps and luckily found them. We then took the green trail past the antenna to get back to Phimaroche and the original route. It was a beautiful little winding path. For the Petit Honack, we preferred to continue along the green ring to go around and climb to the summit, then descend via the yellow horse, which also offered beautiful remains of the castle with a magnificent view. We skipped the Grand Honack, which was fortunate because we had 19 kilometres to walk to get back to the car.

Hello,

A superb hike through forests and villages, with beautiful views and lovely accessible paths.

Two comments, however

- It would be good to specify in brackets that it is the village of LA CHAPELLE to avoid confusion with the chapel located just after the cemetery. In the directions, we are told to follow the yellow cross and then immediately afterwards to pass in front of the chapel, which is confusing.
- Also, it is not very clear when we have to go around the small Hohnack, as there are green circles on both the right and left.
