Around Notre-Dame Cathedral in Chartres

(S/E) Opposite the cathedral, turn left onto Rue du Cloître Notre-Dame, walk alongside the cathedral to reach the north gate. As the Bishop’s Gardens are currently under renovation (August 2022), take Rue Saint-Yves on the left, then turn right onto Rue du Cardinal Pie. Continue straight on along Impasse de la Moutonnerie, then turn right and walk down Tertre Saint-Nicolas.

(1) Take Rue Saint-André, then Rue du Cloître Notre-Dame. Turn right to go behind Saint-André Church.

(2) Cross the Eure and turn left into Rue du Massacre. Continue straight ahead and use the public footbridge. Take the footbridge and walk along the boulevards on the right. View of the cathedral’s apse. Turn right onto Rue Fontaine, cross the river twice and return to the junction from the outward route.

(1) Turn left onto Rue Saint-André, passing the Saint-André Fountain. Walk along the left bank of the Eure, cross the Pont des Minimes and turn right onto Rue de la Tannerie.

(3) Cross the Pont Bouju and continue along Rue du Bourg for 100 m. Turn left into Rue des Écuyers, then left again, then right into Rue aux Juifs and left into Rue de la Planche aux Carpes. Turn right, then left into Rue des Béguines. Turn left into Rue Saint-Hilaire and cross the Eure. Turn right onto Rue du Frou, then right onto Rue de la Grenouillère and right onto Rue de l’Âne Rez. Cross Place Saint-Pierre, go up Rue Saint-Pierre and then follow Tertre Saint-François to the left.

(4) At Place de l’Étape au Vin, take Rue de la Mairie, where you will find the Hôtel Montescot. Cross Place des Halles and take Rue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny on the right. Cross Place Marceau to the right, follow Rue de l’Épervier on the right, then Rue des Vieux Rapporteurs, and arrive near Saint-Aignan Church. Turn left onto Rue des Grenets, then continue along Rue des Changes. Walk along Place Billard and head down Rue de la Poissonnerie, where you’ll find the Maison du Saumon. Turn left onto Rue de la Petite Cordonnerie and continue along Rue aux Herbes to reach the south gate of the cathedral (S/E).
