Above the Vère

The route alternates between passages through the Grésigne forest and paths on the Causse plateaus, offering beautiful views of the Vère valley. To the north, you walk along a small stream lined with caves that are not accessible from the path. A shortcut is also available when the Vère is low at the ford.

This hike is a longer version of the "Around the Vère from Saint-Martin d'Urbens" hike published on Visorando.

Description of the walk

Park on the old bend in the D964, on the right coming from Castelnau-de-Montmiral, before the hamlet of Saint-Martin-d'Urbens (glass recycling container).

(S/E) Head east on a narrow path that runs alongside a field on the right-hand side.

(1) At the end of the field, turn right onto a small path and cross a stream. Follow the Mespel road to the left and climb up to the second bend.

(2) Then take a wide path on the left. This narrows to a limestone plateau path as it climbs. Follow it until you reach a PR®.

(3) Turn left with thePR® (yellow markings) heading north-northeast and reach theGR®46(red and white markings).

(4) At the crossroads at La Trapasse, follow theGR®46(red and white markings) opposite towards Bruniquel (sign). You will come to the wide Route Forestière des Beudes and walk along the stream of the same name for about 1 km.

(5) Turn left towards Bruniquel and cross the Ruisseau des Beudes. The trail climbs back up into the forest. After Merlins, the trail heads due north.

(6) When theGR®46trail branches off to the left (shortcut), continue straight ahead (north). Pass the heath and Débès farms. Continue 50 metres past the abandoned Palme farm.

(7) Then take a path on the left that descends gently. Traces of yellow markings are still visible in places. Follow this trail down into the valley of the Marières caves (these caves are located on the steep limestone slope opposite the path). Turn left and reach a tarmac road.

(8) Turn left, cross the hamlet of Marières and continue through the woods and then between the fields towards Brian de Vère. Join theGR®46and cross the hamlet.

(9) Just after the last house, at the cross, turn left to join the D964.
Cross this road with caution and continue opposite. Cross the Vère on a footbridge and continue to the right, following the river.

(10) At a place called Belbèze, turn left onto the tarmac road.

(11) At a sharp bend in the road, continue straight ahead along a footpath. After several bends, this path heads south and arrives on the plateau with beautiful views of the Vère valley. Descend and arrive at a T-junction.

(12) Turn right to reach the hamlet of Les Nouals.

(13) First turn right then left to follow a wide dirt track downhill to the south.

(14) You will come to a small tarmac road; follow it to the left. At the large junction with the D65, leave the road and take a stony path on the left. Descend towards the valley.

(15) About a hundred metres before reaching the Vère ford, turn right. First follow a wide dirt track through the woods, then walk along a large field.

(16) At the tarmac road, turn left to cross the bridge over the river. You will reach the D964.

(17) Turn left towards Saint-Martin d'Urbens to return to the car park (A/D).

Notes

At point (15), when the water is low, you can return to the hamlet by fording the Vère. This shortcut saves about 1.2 km.

In Brian-de-Vère, there is a picnic area with tables by the river.

Worth a visit

Between points (7) and (8), there are caves high up on the limestone cliff.

A lovely walk, with no major difficulties. Beautiful scenery. A bit too much road walking in the second half.
We’d downloaded the route as there was no mobile signal along the way, so we were able to follow the directions without any trouble. At point 15, it was impossible to cross the Vère at the ford; there was too much water, so we had to take the bridge, which is a bit of a let-down: tarmac and a very busy road.

Hello,
Hike completed yesterday, 17 May 2025...
You'd have to be a world champion orienteer to find your way around!
The trail markings were practically non-existent, and the written description of the route was inconsistent... Yet it would have been so easy to describe, given all the landmarks along the way... Thank you, Google Maps, for guiding us...
On the other hand, it was a beautiful hike, with lovely passages and beautiful views...
A word of advice for the accuracy of the site... update your maps and descriptions...

This route complements the "Around the Vère from St Martin d'Urbens" route.
As with that route, follow the description carefully (there are no markings) to avoid getting lost on side paths.
Remember to stop along the way to enjoy the panoramic views.
This hike is best done in summer as some sections can be relatively difficult after rain.
The route is very shaded.
However, there is virtually no picnic area (just a small table and bench for two people) in the middle of dense vegetation.

Just to clarify: due to the rain over the previous few days, it was impossible to cross the ford at the start. So we turned back and took the small tarmac road at the entrance to the car park towards the viewpoint.
Incidentally, the picnic area is rather dreary: just a table and a concrete bench.
It's a very beautiful hike with lovely views.

Hike with some pleasant ascents and descents. Varied hike, alternating between forest and countryside with beautiful views of the valley. Highly recommended.

Hello,

I did this hike again today, but it was impossible to cross the ford!

However, you can easily avoid about 1 km of tarmac road at the end of the route after the bridge over the Vère. Just follow the river on its right bank along the grassy edge of the field and return to the car park at the chapel. This avoids walking along the fairly busy D 964 road!

Hello, the route is very good except for the last 700 metres, which are along a road with quite a lot of traffic.
