Description of the walk

Note: To make this tour more enjoyable, we decided to climb Carlit on a day trip from Lac des Bouillouses (our accommodation).

++Note++: The ascent of Carlit is only possible on days when there is no wind on the summit ridge.

The route to Carlit overlaps with the two lake tour routes. These are extremely well signposted (wooden signs with arrows and lake names).
Note: The two routes form a loop of nine lakes, which can be extended to include three additional lakes (12). One of the loops takes 3.5 hours and the other 5 hours.

(S/E) From the Chalet-refuge des Bouillouses, head towards the dam.

(1) Pass the Lac des Bouillouses dam.

(2) Take the path west, then north-west, to quickly reach the Estany del Viver.

(3) Continue left towards Estany Sec, passing between this lake and Estany de la Combassa. Continue northwest to reach the Estany de Vallell crossroads.

(4) Cross the footbridge and head west to reach a new crossroads of trails below Estany de Sobirans.

(5) Keep heading west, following vague blue markings, to reach a small pond at the foot of Carlit.
Note: this is the starting point for the ascent of Carlit.

(6) Turn back to the trail junction below Estany de Sobirans.

(5) Take the path on the left that joins the shelter between Estany de Trebens and Estany del Castellar.

(7) Cross the footbridge and continue south-east. Cross another footbridge and follow the Estany de les Dugues on your left, then further on, the Estany del Viver, and you will reach a fork you passed on the way up.

(3) Take the same route as on the way there to easily return to the lodge (S/E).

A great hike with magnificent scenery.
Given the condition of the trail, it must be very busy in summer.
There is indeed a shuttle bus service during the summer season.
We were unable to complete the ascent of Carlit due to gale-force winds. We stopped at Carlit Pond. 🥹

I started the hike from Lac des Bouillouses, but had to turn back: the climb to the lakes is difficult due to the rocky terrain. It would be good to mention this. Thank you

Hike completed on 31 May, there was still snow. There are rocky, slippery sections. Beware of violent storms in the mountains. A sublime hike

Please note that car access to Lac des Bouillouses is no longer permitted. From now on, access will be by shuttle bus and only during the summer season. Otherwise, you will have to stop at the nearest point, a 1.5-hour walk from the lake. This adds 3 hours to the original hiking trail.
In April, the trail is still snow-covered from Lac Noir onwards, with very soft snow. It is impassable without suitable equipment. We therefore quickly gave up after exploring only 10% of the route. Despite all these setbacks, this hike looked promising and what little we saw was breathtaking.

Following various comments and remarks, I have updated the description of our hike and the title.
On that day, it was impossible to complete the climb due to strong winds.

Let's say right away that this hike does not include the climb to the peak of Carlit, which is another longer hike lasting 1.5 hours. It stops at the pond below Carlit. However, the final climb is still steep, with superb views of the lakes. You will need good walking shoes as the ground is very rocky with lots of stones. This hike is very popular, especially on sunny, windless Saturdays. The difficulty level is medium to difficult. The route is perfect.

Without doing the final climb, it's still a very beautiful hike, a little tough on worn knees.
It's hard to get lost, as there are lots of people and the trail is well marked.
And what a view!
thank you!

Of course, this hike is not very difficult given its length, and the climb to the peak is not difficult. However, the tour of the lakes is of moderate difficulty.
I have marked it as difficult at the end of my video.

Very beautiful hike, beautiful route, I recommend it! However, the name of the route should be changed because it does not include the ascent of Carlit. This adds a little "surprise" of an additional 1 hour and 25 minutes of climbing, not counting the descent. I can therefore confirm the difficulty of this last section. The climb is steep, you need to use your hands and watch where you put your feet because I can confirm that any mistake could be fatal (see comment dated 16/07/24), especially if you have a heavy backpack for several days like I did. If only I'd known... But what a pleasure it was to reach the cross! The landscape is magnificent, with an eagle circling overhead as an added bonus.
With the ascent of Carlit, I would classify this hike as difficult (difficulty of the ascent, total elevation gain and length)

This route seemed less difficult than I had been told.
It must be said that we did it in good conditions, on a sunny day with no snow.
There were a few exposed and aerial sections that required using your hands at times.
The route is very well marked.
I made a 4K video with the names of the peaks, which describes the atmosphere of the hike and shows the new 2023 summit route, which is now one-way, not via a single path but via a small loop since the creation of an additional descent path.
It's herehttps://youtu.be/w8EkJjQKGUI?si=axAQ23L_...

I made this climb accompanied by two younger people
On the advice of my companions, I stopped at 2,700 metres
Not because I was tired, but because the route was too technical
The other two continued, delighted with the climb
Well done to everyone who maintains this absolutely magnificent site
