Ablis - Pont-sous-Gallardon

This route is the third of the four sections of the Chemin Charles Péguy. It follows in the footsteps of the poet Charles Péguy, who made two pilgrimages to Chartres (in 1912 and 1913, each lasting four days there and back), celebrated in a poem that has gone down in history.

The route alternates between the landscapes of the Beauce region and other, more hilly and charming landscapes that you might not expect.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Chemin Charles Péguy: overview

Description of the walk

The route is marked with blue and white markers.

Starting point Rue du Heaume in Ablis, a stone's throw from the church (a Péguy plaque has been affixed to the east side since 2014).

(S) Head to the South interchange via Rue du Heaume, Rue de l'Église, Place des Fées, Rue d'Arras, then turn left onto Rue de la Libération (D177). At the roundabout, turn right and take the bridge over the N191.

(1) Turn right and walk below the N191. Then turn left.

(2) Turn right, heading west, and continue straight ahead through fields and copses.

(3) When you reach the N10, go down 40 metres to the left to take a small tunnel passing underneath. Then turn right and quickly left. Leave a path on the left and join a road. Follow it to the left for a few metres and continue straight ahead on a track. At the end, turn right onto a road and cross Gourville.
At the tunnel exit, you can also turn right (up to the plateau) or left (200 metres shorter) to reach Gourville, a picturesque village with an elegant manor house.

(4) Continue along the road and take the tunnel under the motorway. Then pass under the old railway viaduct and continue for 150 metres.

(5) Turn left onto a wooded lane: the markings are faint and sporadic (high forest). The lane leads to the surrounding wall of Esclimont Castle, which you follow southwards for one kilometre.

(6) Beyond this, markings starting at Rue du Parc (left, and second street on the right) lead to the beautiful Saint-Symphorien Church.

(7) Come out onto the D18 and follow it to the right. Take the first left, Rue des Merisiers. Continue along a beautiful rural path following the route of the old railway line.

(8) Cross the D122 and continue along the path opposite. After about 500 m, turn left towards a copse (known as Malavisé), walk between the fields, pass the copse and join the D331-3.

(9) Follow this very quiet road to the left. After about 400 m, turn right onto a path. Turn left shortly afterwards. At the T-junction, turn right and join the old railway line.

(10) Then turn left. At the next junction, go straight ahead. Shortly afterwards, cross a road and continue along the small road opposite (Rue des Lavoirs). Cross a stream (wash house) and continue straight ahead.

(11) At the T-junction, turn right and, after about 50 metres, turn left into Rue des Perrets.

(12) At the next intersection, turn right and pass by the foot of Saint-Georges Church. You will come out onto the D116a (Rue de la Mairie on the left, Rue Charles de Gaulle on the right) and follow it to the right for a few dozen metres.

(13) When the street turns right, leave it and take a path on the left (be careful to spot this turn-off). After about 100 metres, join the platform of another disused railway line and follow it to the right.

(14) Take the D116-7 to the left for 200 metres.

(15) Turn right onto a rural path. When a path comes from the left, turn right (north-northwest). Follow the railway line and pass the station area (not the highlight of the route!). In Gallardon, reach the crossroads between Place de la Gare and Avenue de la Gare (E).

Notes

For all information regarding accommodation and route strategies, see http://www.charlespeguy.fr/vers-chartres.

Lodges in Ablis, Gourville, and (a little further away) Bonville and Prunay-en-Yvelines. Further away, but close to Gué de Longroi: Moulin de Lonceux.

Refreshment points in Ablis, Ymeray, Gallardon; a little further away: Levainville.

Take a list of taxi numbers for the towns you will be passing through.

The Chemin Charles Péguy has received the support of the Eure-et-Loir Departmental Council.

N.B. At the point (2), a circular hiking loop (marked but not shown on Visorando) allows you to reach Bleury via Gué-de-Longroi.

Worth a visit

Very beautiful landscapes of plains interspersed with valleys, varying according to the weather and the season. View of the valley from a "Rémarde" different from the previous one, and of the "shoulder" of Gallardon.

Surprise: in good weather, on leaving Ablis, keen observers will see the cathedral, 26 km away, at point (2). This is a scoop for many.

North of the N10 and the motorway, the landscape changes: the wide valley of the Rémarde (not the same as the day before), wooded surroundings.

Beautiful villages and very beautiful churches in Ablis, Bleury, and Ymeray and, a little further away, Prunay.
Château de Gourville, an ambitious country house.
Château d'Esclimont, glimpsed through an opening in its surrounding wall, magnificent.
Railway engineering feat: Gourville/Bleury viaduct, for those who appreciate such architectural achievements.

A transitional stage!
I was expecting this to be the least enjoyable stage of the route, but in the end I was pleasantly surprised. It's like diving into the heart of the Beauce region, which was enjoyable, and it really makes you want to see the cathedral!
The route and description are always top notch.
I don't think I saw anyone else along the way.
Passage No. 3 under the national road is quite challenging; it's impossible to get through without bending down.
The pretty villages of Beauce make you forget the noise of the motorways, which is sometimes audible.

There are many fields along this stage, which in my opinion is not the most scenic part of the route. The exit from Ablis is a bit gloomy along the road. At the exit of the tunnel at point 3, I hesitated a little; you have to go right and then left. Watch out for cars on the road between points 4 and 5, which isn't very wide, especially under the railway bridge, which isn't very reassuring! Between St Symphorien and Ymeray, it's a bit monotonous, but that gives you time to meditate Beautiful arrival at Pont sous Gallardon.

The description and map provided by the website are more than sufficient for this hike.
This part of the Peguy trail is very exposed to the sun.
Be careful at point 3, where the entrance to the passage under the N10 is overgrown with brush (shorts are not recommended).
I stayed at the Manoir du Pont, where I received a very warm welcome in a wonderful setting.

The churches of Saint-Symphorien-le-Château, Bleury and Ymeray serve as guides on these fertile plateaus of Haute-Beauce, until reaching Pont-sous-Gallardon and the Voise valley. The old railway line serves as their backbone and the Chemin winds its way around it. The Gothic bell tower of Gallardon and the Tour de l'Epaule, its ruined neighbour, are characteristic of this pretty medieval village with its cobbled streets and half-timbered houses.

Note: route taken on the afternoon of 16 July 2016.

I made a mistake in Prunay...
The blue markings are correct at the start of Ablis.
But unfortunately, I followed the yellow markings.
I found myself too low.
I think that before entering Prunay, you should turn left
and not go straight on to Prunay.
I could no longer see the blue markings.
Beautiful scenery and a beautiful day.
