Discovering the Sacra di San Michele

This route allows you to approach and discover, step by step rather than by car, the magnificent Sacra di San Michele, a 10th-century abbey perched on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 1,000 metres above the Susa Valley. It is considered the Italian Mont Saint-Michel.

Description of the walk

Park at the “Certosa 1515” car park.

(S/E) Turn right onto the path that runs behind the building and follows the wall (red and white sign “Sacra di San Michele, Mortera”). At the end of the wall, take the path that descends to the right, cross a track and then a footbridge near the San Francesco spring.

(1) At the entrance to the hamlet of Mortera, in front of the niche containing a statue of the Virgin Mary, continue straight on along a small tarmac road that climbs slightly (sign for “sentiero dei principi” and red and white markings).

(2) Further on, the road turns into a track at a large house on the left (“Pian dij Fan”), opposite a “dead end” sign, a small wooden fountain, a red and white barrier and a “viewpoint” sign. Follow the track as it climbs through the Scots pine forest for about 1.5 km to the pass (Punta del Faro).

(3) In front of us lies the Sacra and a magnificent backdrop of peaks. The forest track continues through the undergrowth, descending slightly to the Croce Nera pass, where it meets the road and a large car park.

(4) Continue straight on, following the road uphill for 150m, then turn right at the bend onto the road leading up to the abbey (do not take the paths marked “Mulatiera” and “Chiusa San Michele”).
This brings you to the entrance to the abbey.

(5) Return via the same route, with, after the Col del Faro, a lovely view of the Avigliana lakes and, further on, the city of Turin (S/E).

Warning! Area highly susceptible to forest fires. Please be extremely careful (cigarette ends, etc.).

Worth a visit

1. At the starting point, Certosa 1515 is a former 16th-century Carthusian monastery, tastefully and simply converted into accommodation and a restaurant, and run by a Turin-based association. Peace and quiet guaranteed! A great place to eat or even stay the night before or after the hike. There is also a Terra Libera shop on site (an anti-Mafia association). http://www.certosa1515.org/fr/

2. Allow an hour to visit the Sacra. Not to be missed! Opening times and prices at https://www.sacradisanmichele.com/fr/

A pleasant walk, often in the shade, with lovely views of both the valleys and the Sacra di San Michele. A good climb up to the pass, followed by a scenic walk along the ridge back to the car park.
