Description of the walk

Car park at the entrance to the road leading to Troisvierges station.

(S/E) With the railway on your right, head towards the bus stop. Look for the stairs behind the low wall and down behind the building. At the bottom, turn right and walk along the river on your left. Continue to the left of the Tennis Club building and walk to a footbridge with a white railing.

(1) Cross the footbridge and continue to the right along the river, which is now on your right. At the corner of the football pitch, turn left and walk along the pitch. At the end, turn right and go through the green gate on your left. At the crossroads, go straight ahead towards the Tourist Information building. Take the path to the left of the building and walk to a signpost.

(2) Continue straight ahead towards Cinqfontaines. You will return via the path climbing up on your left. Ignore the footbridges and pass under the railway bridge. Take the footbridge after the railway bridge and cross over the Woltz (river). Follow the path climbing up opposite until you reach the road.

(3) Turn right and then immediately left before the house. You will see a gate marking the entrance to the path you need to follow. Follow the main path uphill until you reach a road with a memorial stone on your left. Opposite the monument, take the forest path on the right towards Cinqfontaines.

(4) At the fork with a shelter (not visible on maps), continue to the left. Pass through the hay meadows. Then enter under the conifers and descend to the road. Turn right, carefully following the road, and immediately turn left at the crossroads. Change of markings.

Walk a little over 200 m along the road until you reach a path on your left.

(5) Take this path and walk between the broom bushes. At the fork, keep to the right. Discover a Marian grotto. At the next fork, continue left until you reach the road. Turn right and discover the memorial. Walk up the road and discover a map showing Cinqfontaines opposite the buildings. Continue along the road, turning sharply to the right, and climb up to the junction with another road.

(6) Turn sharply left and continue climbing the road. At the bend, turn left and then immediately left again. Go down the road behind the buildings to the convent cemetery. Continue to the right. Stay on the main path for about 1.2 km and enter the village of Sassel. Keep left, cross the Trätterbach and, at the road, continue to the right. Pass the sign for the village of Sassel and turn sharply left onto the uphill road. Change of signposting.

(9) Look for the path opposite. Follow this path for about 300 m until you reach a road. Turn right and cross the level crossing.

(10) Turn immediately left and walk along the railway tracks. At the junction with a wide path on your right, continue straight ahead and take the path up the embankment. Follow this path for about 1 km. Descend under the trees. Once in the open, ignore the path on the left and go up. Walk for another 500 m and, just before you leave the woods, look for the path on your left.

(11) Take this path. Descend and you will come to a wide path. Turn left and follow the railway line. View of the other side of Cinqfontaines on your left. Climb up and walk to a fork.

(12) Continue left for 500 m. Leave the woods and walk along a meadow. The path turns sharply to the left. At the next bend, look for the path going straight ahead.

(13) Take this path. Follow the fence, then cross the footbridge over the Luckeschbaach and climb uphill.

(14) Before the house, take a sharp left turn. Follow the path and, at the signpost, go straight ahead to see a viewpoint. Back at the signpost, go down the path continuing on your left. At thesecond flight of steps, take a sharp right turn and go down to the signpost. End of signposting.

No markings

(2) Turn right towards the Tourist Information building. Continue towards the green barrier and go through it, then turn left. Take the same path you took on the way there, walking alongside the football pitch.

Worth a visit

During

Cinqfontaines Convent: in 1941, Cinqfontaines Abbey became the only internment camp for Jews in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg during the Second World War. The monks were expelled by the occupying forces, and the convent was used as a gathering place for Jews, who were held there before being deported to concentration camps in the East. Internment in appalling conditions preceded deportation to Nazi concentration and extermination camps such as Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. In 1944, the American army converted the convent into a field hospital. In 1973, the convent became a place of retreat and reflection. The site was acquired by the State in 2020 with the aim of establishing a memorial and educational centre dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust and the promotion of democracy and human rights.

Memorial: established in 1969. More than 300 Jews passed through this transit point until June 1943.
