Lus-la-Jarjatte - Le pré de la Lèbre

Starting from the ski resort of Lus, this route takes you through wild areas of beech and fir woodland and open spaces offering views of the Aiguilles de Lus (2,161m) or the Tête de Vachères (2,402m). A slight climb classifies this hike as moderate, but there are generally no technical difficulties to note; do take care, however, depending on weather conditions.

Description of the walk

Snowshoe trail no. 2

(S/E) From the resort reception, turn right at the “Vachères” ski lift and follow the path lined with boxwood. At the first clearing, leave this path on the right to continue the route into the forest.

(1) At the junction with the road, cross it and continue straight ahead, skirting the field on the left. Return to the road. Cross it and take the route opposite leading into the forest. The path, clearly marked at the start, then continues through the undergrowth. Follow the specific snowshoe markings carefully.

(2) Follow the track to the right until you reach the junction with the Grande Randonnée (GR® ) trail (marked in white and red). From there, take theGR® to the left and follow it up the Ravin des Aiguilles (torrent). On reaching the ski area (take care, skiers may be coming from the right), cross the slopes to rejoin the route opposite. Cross the small ridge above the slopes and continue uphill, following the ski run to reach the top of the “Champ Tondu 2” ski lift.

(3) For safety reasons, pass at the foot of the last pylon (as close as possible to the markings). Continue along the piste to descend on the other side for 50m. Then take the path that climbs to the right. At the junction, turn left; the route climbs and follows a small ridge line.

(4) Leaving this ridge line to the right, the route descends through the Pré la Lèbre (the hare in local dialect).
Further down, take a path that descends to the left until it joins the downhill ski run.

(5) Follow the ski runs to the right to descend back to the resort (S/E).

A lovely little route starting from La Jarjatte station, below Le Dévoluy. Mostly through forest. A few sections along the edge of the piste. A very pleasant route.

Most of the route runs through woodland; it’s lovely in summer.
The only downside: very few views of the Jarjatte valley.
I followed this route in mid-June and didn’t see any ‘snowshoeing’ signs
