(S/E) From the start, follow the GR®16 (GR® markings: white on red) to the Moulin de l’Epine. You will pass various viewpoints, in order: (1) a first one with no name, then (2) the Côte d’Auclin viewpoint, (3) the Bouillon viewpoint, (4) the Abbey Church of Notre Dame (Cordemois), (5) the Epine viewpoint.
(6) Cross the footbridge then head up to your right to the signposted viewpoints (7) then (8) and head back down the path below to a junction.
(9) Continue along this path to the left until you reach the viewpoint (10) Then turn back to continue towards the picnic area.
For the more adventurous
At point (9) it is possible to take the path on the right, though I do not recommend this for groups or with children.
The path ends and disappears about a hundred metres before the viewpoint (10). (Path invisible/non-existent for about 150m)
(This is the route I used, as I find the path more scenic and pleasant than the main rocky trail, before adjusting the route to make it accessible to as many people as possible).
Warning
From point (11) to (12) the dirt and grassy path can be extremely slippery in wet weather.
(12) Head up to your right towards the viewpoints (13) and (14), then descend towards point (7)
(7) Head down the path on the right, then straight on, following the GR®14 (GR® white on red markings) to point (15).
Caution
Between point (15) and the small bridge crossing the stream a few metres further on, you will cross a slab which may be slippery when wet or even difficult to cross in the event of flooding.
After point (15), cross the stream then head up the path on the right towards point (16), then head down to your left towards the next stream; before reaching it, take the path on the right and cross the stream.
Head up towards the GR® 14 variant, take it to the right, then stay on it for about 100m before taking the first path branching off to the right.
Follow this path to the N810 road, which you will cross to rejoin the path until you reach a four-way junction; take the path on your right and then right again at the bottom of it.
(17) You will need to leave the path temporarily to the left to go round the lake and the dam built by the beavers.
Please respect their habitat and do not disturb them intentionally.
Return to the path after the dam, then at the Y-junction ahead of you, take the branch leading uphill to the right.
(18) The path fades away slightly here; once you reach this marker, head off at an angle of about 45° to your right and continue until you reach the main track (you shouldn’t be able to miss it – it’s a track suitable for vehicles, between two coniferous woods), then carry on straight ahead.
Once you reach the road, take the small path on your left and, at the first houses, turn left once more, following the signs for “La Ramonette”.
(19) La Ramonette viewpoint, the final highlight of this walk, offering unrivalled views of Godefroy de Bouillon’s castle and the town stretching out below.
All that remains is to head back down to finish the walk. (S/E)
