Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 242 m
  2. 1 : km 0.1 - alt. 236 m - From the carpark, go over the road bridge. A 100 yards down the road, take the signed footpath on the left. Follow the obvious farm track that winds up the hill.
  3. 2 : km 1.29 - alt. 308 m - Go through the gate across the track and follow the obvious track.
  4. 3 : km 1.63 - alt. 341 m - Follow the fingerpost uphill. The route to the top of the moor is fairly obvious. There are the odd wooden posts, cairns (near the top) and slabs (near the top).
  5. 4 : km 3.38 - alt. 594 m - Follow the track next to the broken stone wall. If desired, do an out-and-back to the trig point.
  6. 5 : km 4.19 - alt. 604 m - Follow the stone wall to the northwest.
  7. 6 : km 5.38 - alt. 606 m - Birks Fell's cairn is visible from the stone wall. There is a vague track that goes to the cairn.
  8. 7 : km 5.62 - alt. 609 m - Return to the stone wall and continue to the north west.
  9. 8 : km 6.07 - alt. 603 m - The area between here and the shake holes (to the north west is very wet and boggy. You need to make quite a detour (almost to the wire fence to the north east to avoid the worst of it. Once you've avoided the worst, make your way over to the shake holes.
  10. 9 : km 6.7 - alt. 595 m - Continue following the stone wall along the top of the moor.
  11. 10 : km 7.87 - alt. 583 m - The next section is enclosed by a barbed fence. There is a stile on each side that allows you to traverse it.
  12. 11 : km 8.55 - alt. 601 m - Take the vague path up to the small cairn for Horse Head Moor.
  13. 12 : km 8.69 - alt. 605 m - Head back to the stone wall and keep following along the top of the moor.
  14. 13 : km 9.54 - alt. 594 m - Keep to the east of the stone wall. The Horse Head trig is on the west side, but there is no stile to get back across to the east side.
  15. 14 : km 11.57 - alt. 568 m - The track down to the north is obvious. There are a few small cairns to indicate the way.
  16. 15 : km 13.18 - alt. 308 m - The route back to Buckden follows the Dales Way. This follows the River Wharfe and is very well signed. It should not present any problems.
  17. 16 : km 20.9 - alt. 223 m - At the road, turn left and return to the carpark using the route used on the outward journey.
  18. S/E : km 21.32 - alt. 242 m
