  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 48 m
  2. 1 : km 0.05 - alt. 51 m - Leave thehotel and walk along the road towards Hackness - 01
  3. 2 : km 0.43 - alt. 48 m - At the junction by the village Hall, turn right towards Ayton and continue down the road for about 400m, until you reach a stile on your left - 02
  4. 3 : km 0.73 - alt. 48 m - Turn left through the stile and climb towards the tree line above you. Note the actual footpath zigzags up the slope. Walk along the treeline, to the left, until you find a stile leading into the woods. - 03
  5. 4 : km 1.2 - alt. 72 m - Cross over the stile into the woods. The path keeps to the edge of the woods as you follow the hill above Hackness. Eventually the path exits the woods, and you enter a field above Hackness Hall. - 04
  6. 5 : km 1.89 - alt. 83 m - Cross the stile at the end of the field. You will see the road below you, but try to keep as high as possible as you make your way around the hill. Eventually you will meet a path leading down to the road at a point where there is a track, over a bridge, leading into the field beyond. - 05
  7. 6 : km 2.29 - alt. 74 m - Cross the bridge and enter the field. There are two exits at the other side of the field, one to the left and one to the right. Head towards the right hand exit which has a gate. - 06
  8. 7 : km 2.7 - alt. 99 m - You now enter a steep sided valley climbing slowly to the plateau at Merrick's Rigg - 07
  9. 8 : km 3.29 - alt. 156 m - At the end of the valley the path climbs out , up a short set of steps to signpost. The short route goes directly ahead (signed Cumboots) To follow the shorter route turn left. - 08
  10. 9 : km 4.12 - alt. 180 m - After 500m you emerge on to the Swange Road as it starts ti head down the hill to Cumboots. Do not go down the hill, but take the left turn and almost immediately turn right on to the footpath - 09
  11. 10 : km 4.68 - alt. 187 m - After 300m you will reach a trig point with a view over the ridge towards Burniston and the coast. - 10
  12. 11 : km 6.09 - alt. 184 m - Continue along the footpath to your left, along the edge of the ridge, until you come close to the road . Do not go onto the road but follow the path away from the road and into the woods - 11
  13. 12 : km 6.56 - alt. 183 m - After 300m the footpath approached the road again. Continue on the footpath, parallel to the road, until you meet a junction of footpaths. Take the path straight ahead which curves to the right. Do not take the right turn which leads downwards. - 12
  14. 13 : km 7.47 - alt. 180 m - Eventually the footpath reaches the road again. This time cross the road and take the small road leading off to the left. - 13
  15. 14 : km 8.01 - alt. 184 m - Follow this road to the T-junction and turn right along the road - 14
  16. 15 : km 8.23 - alt. 186 m - After 150m turn left into a field and follow the track straight ahead. There is a footpath sign hidden in the hedge to the left - 15
  17. 16 : km 8.64 - alt. 184 m - Follow the footpath around the field's edge and along a hedge until you turn right and see the track heading downhill. The track continues to the right of a low stone wall, but the footpath continues, parallell to the track, but on the left of the wall. - 16
  18. 17 : km 9.24 - alt. 175 m - Follow the signed path until you reach a stile with paths indicating to the right and left . Turn right, shortly cross a stile into a steep sided valley. - 17
  19. 18 : km 9.5 - alt. 152 m - Descend to the valley bottom, turn left along the stone wall and enter the woods - 18
  20. 19 : km 10.28 - alt. 108 m - Continue through the woods until you reach the road. Turn left and follow the zig-zag road into Hackness - 19
  21. 20 : km 10.77 - alt. 60 m - On reaching the junction with the main road through Hackness turn right. - 20
  22. 21 : km 11.12 - alt. 59 m - You can follow the road through Hackness, taking the right fork in front of the Village Hall back to the hotel. Alternatively, after about 200m, you can take the footpath upwards, to the right. This takes you to the hotel avoiding the road. - 21
  23. S/E : km 11.93 - alt. 49 m
