Shevington Standish Circular

6m mile circular route starting from Shevington crossing Mill Brook into Elnup Wood, From here the route makes its way via Standish Park to cross Mill Brook and M6 motorway onto Shevington Vale. Having made its way around the vale the route heads back to start over Gathurst Golf course.

Description

(S/E) Head East along Vicarage Lane past sports ground and allotments.
Leave track East (left) following curving Northern boundary of woodland.

(1) Turn East (left) entering wood to take footbridge over Mill Brook.
Carefully cross Wigan Lower Road to briefly head North (left).
Take track East (right) off Wigan Lower Road.
Continue East on track past small war memorial.

(2) On reaching Pit Pond turn SE (right) to follow path along edge of woodland.
Turn NE (left) to follow Eastern boundary of Standish Park.

(3) Take path NW (left) past site of Standish Hall, now farm. Good views West to Billinge Hill and Beacon Park.

(4) Turn SW (left) on path opposite site of Catholic hermitage.

(5) Cross over Mill Brook to turn North (right) up incline onto Parkbrook Lane.
Turn North (right) briefly onto Shevington Lane.
Take path NW (left) off Shevington Lane crossing over motorway bridge onto northern edge of wood.
Take path NE across field towards communications tower.

(6) Follow field boundary South (sharp left)
Take path SW (right) via horse paddock and along southern side of houses.

(7) Pass through gate to take path down slope and follow it as it it curves South (left).
Turn SE (left) briefly along Miles Lane.

(8) Leave Miles Lane South (right) taking path South around field boundary.

(9) Turn East (left) along Broadriding Lane.
Leave lane taking path SE (right) carefully across Shevington Golf Course.
Cross footbridge to continue East on path through houses onto Vicarage Lane and back to start. (S/E)

A circular walk starting from Beacon Park then via Dean Brook to Roby Mill onto Ashurst Beacon and back to Beacon Park. Good views over Winter Hill and Mersey Estuary on the route.

Orrell Winstanley Circular

Departure from Wigan (Greater Manchester)

Starting from Orrell Waterpark then follows lower slopes of Billinge Hill before ascending to Winstanley College and back to the waterpark. Good views over Mersey, Winter Hill and Cheshire hills.
⚠️ Apparently there is a problem with the route between waypoints (7) and (8). Partway along the footpath parallel to Chair Wood there are signs stating this is private land and there is no right of way. These signs are repeated at the other end of the path on Park Road and the gate giving access to Park Road is locked. If anyone could check and offer another alternative please?

Wigan Flashes Circular

Departure from Wigan (Greater Manchester)

The walk starts at Westwood Road Wigan in order to join the canal and head south. On leaving the canal the route passes through Wigan Flashes and Turners Flash before heading back to start.
