Crook Standish Circular

Circular Walk starting from sports ground in Crook then North onto Birley Pond, Birley & Elnup Woods exiting over Mill Brook to gently ascend to Birch Walk. The route then follows the boundary of Standish Park before heading back to start via Giants Hall Farm and Standish Wood Lane. Good views of Beacon Park and Winter Hill ridges from high points.

Description der Wandertour

Start from the sports ground in Crook (Woodrush Road).

(S/E) Take the path North-West between the sports ground and the overflow car park. At the pitch end (9) follow the path as it turns right. (North-East). At Frodshum Barn turn left (West) off the tarmac track to follow the path beside the entrance to Frodshum Barn. The path bears left (West) in front of a small war memorial.

(1) At Birley Pond, take the path North beside Birley pond into Birley Wood. Continue on the path through Elnup Wood as it bears left (North-West) in front of Elnup Cottages.

(2) After crossing over Mill Brook, turn sharply right (North-East) along a gently ascending footpath passing site of the catholic retreat.

(3) Just before a school and houses, turn right (South-East) along Beech Walk path. Eventually, you reach Standish Wood lane where you keep straight ahead South-East towards Prospect Road. Leave Prospect Rd to follow the farm track on your right (South).

(4) At a junction, turn left (East) onto the bridleway and follow it as it curves past Wakefields Farm and around the South side of houses until you reach Wakefield Crescent road. Follow Wakefield Crescent right (South-South-East). At the end of the road, continue along the footpath on the South side of the field boundary. On reaching Boers Head Wood, take the track left (North-East) to Wigan Road (A49).

(5) Turn sharp right (South) to take the road through Gidlow Cemetery.

(6) At the end of the cemetery, turn left (East) taking the path towards the railway line. When you reach the railway line, turn right (South) to follow a path initially parallel to the rail track, then bearing right (South-West) before reaching the green security fence. Follow this fence left (South). Then, follow the track on your right, heading West through a gateway in the green security fence and cross Gidlow Lane.

(7) Continue West on the pathway between houses. Turn right (North-West) onto Standish Wood Lane and follow the lane past Giant's Hall. Carry straight on the path at the end of the lane (North-West).

::8: Turn left (South-West) along the track in front of Speckled Holly cottage. Upon reaching Lower Wood Farm continue South-West along the footpath beside the field boundary. Turn right (North-West) along the raised track.
then, turn left (South-West) in front of Frodshum Barn along wide track.

(9) You may now recognise the path you came from at the start. Follow the path as it turns left (South) between football pitches to reach the starting point at the sports ground in Crook. (S/E)
