(S/E) From The Pack Horse' front entrance, turn right along Watling Street towards Affetside Cross. Just before the Cross, take a signposted footpath on the left alongside the Millennium Green. Follow the path to the end of the Green and cross a stile into open fields. Follow the telegraph poles downhill until you meet the end of a grassy track, and continue in the same direction.
(1) At Cromptons Farm, take the surfaced lane (Slack Lane) straight on. Follow it left, right and right again as it skirts a large covered reservoir, then turn left at the reservoir entrance and out to Bradshaw road.
(2) Cross straight over into the access road to Bradshaw Hall Fisheries. Keep on past the entrance barrier and the turning into the fisheries and then, before the road starts to descend steeply, take a path on the right by an old stone gatepost. This path, muddy in places, leads gradually down through trees to the dam of Jumbles Reservoir.
(3) Turn left down steps and cross the stream below the dam. Take the steep stepped path immediately in front of you. This path leads behind buildings and into a metalled road (Grange Road), where you turn right.
At The Grange, continue in the same direction along a walled concrete path and then descend on a wide gravelly path to the reservoir edge. Follow the lakeside path until it crosses a bridge over an overgrown arm of the reservoir.
(4) Turn right and walk past the Jumbles Country Park car park, then leave the road on a tarmac path to the left between bollards (signposted “RESERVOIR FOOTPATH”) that passes between Lees Cottages on your right and a fishing lake on your left.
Regain the water’s edge beyond the cottages, then cross the bridge over the neck of the reservoir.
(5) Turn right and walk back along the other side of the reservoir until you encounter a semicircular stone structure on your left. Just beyond this, and before a gate on the right, turn left (away from the reservoir) on an uphill footpath through the trees with a Rotary Way waymark.
On emerging into open fields at a stile, walk round a holly tree then swing right, aiming just to the right of Walsh Fold farm buildings that appear ahead of you. By a lone tree, turn left through a gate into the farmyard. Swing right and left past the old farmhouse and exit along the metalled farm drive.
(6) When you reach Bradshaw road, cross straight over and walk up the drive to Toye Farm. Beyond the farmhouse a gate leads into open fields – follow the field edge beyond to a stile, and then continue to the left of a line of trees beyond.
After a crossing path, climb a stile in the corner (if this field corner is boggy, take the path on the left, which leads out to Watling Street, and turn right to walk up the road to The Pack Horse). Walk up the fence to a corner, then head straight across to a gate at the left-hand end of a cypress hedge.
Go through the gate into Baxter Head farmyard and turn left to pass between the buildings and out to Watling Street. Turn right and walk up the road, past Affetside Cross, back to The Pack Horse. (S/E)
