View of the Alps - Chasseral

Eighth stage From Les Rousses to Lake Constance via the Jura ridges. From the Col de la Vue des Alpes, the flower-filled route winds through pastures to Mont d'Amin, offering a vast panorama of the Mittelland and the Chasseral massif. A long descent then leads to Les Vieux Prés, whose bocage landscape is reminiscent of Normandy: hedges, trees and dry stone walls delimit the plots. After the farming village of Le Pâquier, the trail crosses the Combe Biosse, a limestone gorge carved out by erosion, before reaching the Chasseral ridge, with the Alps and the lakes of Morat, Biel and Neuchâtel as a backdrop.

Description of the walk

Markings: signposts with sticker no. 5 on a green background (Jura Höhenweg).

(S) From your bivouac at Col de La Vue des Alpes, take the path that leaves the Tourist Office in a north-easterly direction. Climb up to the technical building located directly above the Vue des Alpes Tunnel.

(1) Continue opposite, heading northeast/east on the grassy path lined with flowers through the pastures, pass an isolated house by the side of the path, then continue on to join the tarmac road to Mont d'Amin.

(2) At the signpost, turn right towards Mont d'Amin. In the sharp right-hand bend, leave the tarmac road and continue north-east on a wide stony path through the woods. When you come out of the woods, turn left at the signpost to leave the wide path, go through the turnstile, and continue across the meadow to the top of Mont d'Amin.

(3) Begin descending towards an isolated building on the side of the path.

(4) Continue left towards the northeast on the open path until you reach an intersection.

(5) Cross over and follow the path opposite, which runs alongside the woods. After a hairpin bend, change direction and head right towards the south-west to enter the woods. Continue straight ahead until you reach the edge of the woods, where you will come to a signpost on Chemin de la Colle.

(6) Turn left, head south-east and take Chemin de la Biche. Pass a farm and continue to the signpost at the fork.

(7) Turn left (northeast) onto the wooded path towards Blanche Herbe/Le Paquier/Chasseral. Follow this path until you reach the signpost on the tarmac road Le Putret.

(8) Turn right (west/south-west) and continue along Les Vieux-Prés road until you reach the signpost. Turn left (north-east) towards La Croix/Le Pâquier/Chasseral. Follow this direction until you reach the signpost at Les Planches.

(9) Before reaching the tarmac road, at the fork, turn left north towards Chasseral. Continue through the forest and discover a landscape of hedgerows reminiscent of Normandy. You will then arrive at a place called Le Côty, where there are two houses.

(10) Turn right towards the west and follow this road to the Chez Marinette lodge, located at La Croix.

(11) At the signpost, turn left towards Le Pâquier/Chasseral. Continue carefully north-east on the Route des Fontaines. Drive through the village of Le Pâquier and head for the signpost opposite a café-restaurant.

(12) Turn right and follow the signs for Chasseral. At the fork in front of the playground, turn left to continue along the road through the woods, then continue straight on to the signpost.

(13) Turn left onto the stony path to begin a beautiful climb towards Chasseral. Cross the Aigremont hillside and continue to the signpost located on the edge of the Val-de-Ruz road, Neuchâtel.

(14) Continue straight ahead towards the north-east on the path parallel to the road, then, at the La Combe Biosse picnic area, head west to follow La Combe Biosse on a stony path at the bottom of a deep gorge carved into the limestone rock by erosion. Follow the Ruz de Chasserant (stream) closely, crossing it several times via footbridges. Climb up to the second footbridge.

(15) Continue climbing north-east until you exit the woods at a place called La Métairie de l'Ile.

(16) Continue north-east across the meadows and head towards the rock at the crossroads.

(17) Continue left towards the northeast to reach the summit of Mont Chasseral, passing in front of the Métairie de Dombresson (restaurant). In summer, with a little luck, you may see marmots there.

(18) Continue north-east through Les Aplages, slightly downhill, to the cattle grid crossing a dry stone wall.

(19) Continue downhill to the Col de Chasseral road.

(20) Turn right onto the slightly uphill road and continue to the signpost.

(21) Leave the road and turn right onto the grassy path uphill, following the direction of the Hôtel Chasseral. A little further up, you will rejoin the Route du Col de Chasseral.

(22) Cross the road and continue left, north-east, on the stony path which climbs quite steeply after passing through a barrier. At the top, you will find yourself facing a rock face.

(23) Follow the path through the barrier, go through the turnstile, turn right and you will reach the car park of the Hôtel Chasseral (E). Then look for a discreet spot in the vicinity to set up your bivouac.
