South Ardennes Greenway from Château-Porcien to Pont-à-Bar

A peaceful cycle ride along the Voie Verte Sud Ardenne, which runs alongside the Canal des Ardennes from Château-Porcien to Pont-à-Bar, punctuated by the numerous locks.
To compensate for the difference in level between the Canal des Ardennes and the Meuse, between Le Chesne and Rilly-sur-Aisne, no fewer than 27 locks line the canal, 17 of which are within the Montgon area. Follow the Canal des Ardennes, discover its locks, via a short detour to the Château de La Cassine, and the passage through the Saint-Aignan tunnel.

Notes

(4) A short detour to the entrance of Thugny Castle is possible, a few hundred metres away in the heart of the village (private property), by turning right at the lock.

(22) As the development of the greenway was not yet complete on the Saint-Aignant / Hannogne Saint-Martin section at the time of writing, a diversion has been put in place through the village of Hannogne Saint-Martin (route).

(E) A connection with the Trans-Ardennes Greenway (and Eurovelo 19) is available at Pont-à-Bar, allowing you to extend your cycling trip and fully enjoy the natural beauty of the department.

The Canal des Ardennes is an artificial waterway, the first lock of which was laid on 24 August 1823 at Pont-à-Bar to provide the region with a major transport link; today, the Canal des Ardennes is mainly used by pleasure boaters. Tourists who sail along it encounter a landscape that remains wild, unspoilt and authentic.
This route invites you to explore a section of it.

Worth a visit

This safe route will allow you to explore the southern part of the department by bike, along the Canal des Ardennes, and thus discover towns and villages such as Rethel, Attigny, Semuy, Le Chesne, La Cassine, etc.
Lac de Bairon is now also accessible by bike, via the Voie Verte
