(S/E) Set off from the entrance to Bécherel church, keeping it on your right (head towards Place du Presbytère where the crêperie is located). Note the many bookshops along the way (which you’ll find in almost every street in the centre).
At the far end of this square, turn left onto Rue de la Chanvrerie; you will arrive at the small square where the town’s market halls once stood.
Continue straight ahead, then take the first street on the left, Rue des Douves, before the large retirement home building; then turn right, where a flight of steps and a dirt track lead you down towards the “lower part of Bécherel”.
(1) At the bottom, you can admire the town “from below”; a short detour to the right (100m) is possible to see the recently renovated Couaille wash house.
Walk along the water’s edge, turning left and skirting around it; on your left, an old mill, still inhabited.
After this, take the sunken path on your left until you reach the next road.
(2) At the end of this path, turn left and cross the D27 (be careful, this can be dangerous!). Continue towards the first proper road on the left.
(3) Follow it to the left and cross the D27 again. Take the first path on the right, a pleasant, shaded route, which leads you to Rue de la Quintaine. Take this on your left, then turn left twice to reach Chemin de la Coquerie, which runs alongside the cemetery.
(4) At the bottom, turn right, then take the first path branching off to the right; this is quite difficult due to its steepness and the condition of the surface.
You’ll arrive at the foot of the ramparts; turn right to go round them, then left onto Chemin de Ronde.
Continue to the town hall square, which you go round to take the Route de Linquéniac on the right.
On leaving the village, take the path on the left, which leads to the Chemin de la Roncette; follow this up to Rue de la Libération.
When you reach Rue de la Libération, turn right.
(5) Continue straight ahead along the Chemin du Calvaire, which climbs towards the Parc de Caradeuc.
At the end of the path, turn left, then left again 50 metres further on.
Walk past the Maison du Livre, then return to the old town via Rue du Faubourg Berthault.
(6) Back at the Place des Anciennes Halles, turn right to go round the church; after the church, take the steps on your left to reach the Jardins du Thabor; on leaving these gardens, head towards a car park, then leave it via the old tower (please note: do not go down the stairs). Continue your visit along the path that will take you past the church, via the Place du Presbytère (S/E).
