Vineyards and banks of the Garonne between Podensac and Cérons

This route starts in Podensac and takes you along the Garonne and its traditional fishing huts, through some wooded areas and across vineyards.
The start of the walk is near the municipal estate of Chavat, built in the early 20th century by an industrialist. It features copies of ancient statues and has been designated a ‘remarkable garden’.
The water tower that supplied the estate was the first building constructed in France by Le Corbusier.

Description of the walk

Parking along the Garonne, Rue des Fontaines opposite the Allées Georges Montel.

(S/E) Turn right onto Rue des Fontaines, which runs alongside the Garonne; after 400 m, you will see a wash house on the left. At the end of the tarmac section, continue along the path that runs alongside the stadium’s retaining wall. Follow this path until you reach a road on the right.

(1) At the T-junction, take the path on the left which passes between cultivated plots; at thefirst bend to the right, ignore a faint path running alongside the ditch.

(2) Take the underpass beneath the D13 (Beguey Bridge ramp) opposite. On the other side of the ramp, take the road opposite which passes through cultivated fields and runs alongside the Garonne; note the Carrelet fishing huts.

(3) Continue along the road which runs alongside a stream. At the T-junction in the hamlet of Larroc (house with blue shutters), take the road on the left (towards Le Bourg) and follow the road to another T-junction. In Le Bourg, at the former girls’ school, take Rue Latour opposite (church, Château de Cérons). At Rue de Barthé, which branches off to the left in the middle of a wide bend, continue straight ahead. Cross the D1113 (Route de Toulouse) carefully and take the street opposite.

(4) At the roundabout in front of the town hall, take Rue Branly towards the next roundabout (shelter under the market hall and public toilets in a recess in front of the school). Atthe second roundabout, take the D17 (towards Hanna Sud) and go over the railway line. Take thefirst street on the left (Jeanne de Mottes). At the T-junction, continue straight ahead (l’Émigré).

(5) At the four-way junction before a bridge over a stream, turn right onto Rue Barreyre. At the gas installation, turn left onto the stony track that runs between the vineyards and the woods.

(6) At the end of the vineyards, continue straight ahead along the path through the middle of the Bois des Clottes. At thefirst stony track, continue straight ahead and ignore the poorly marked paths. Continue through the woods until you reach a bend at a place called Le Frayre.

(7) Continue along the tarmac road. Take thefirst road on the right and, at the Y-junction in the hamlet of Le Merle, veer slightly left. Cross the tarmac road and continue along the path between two buildings.

(8) At the end of the path, take the gravel track on the right. At the sewage treatment plant, turn left into the track leading into the woods and continue along the path until you reach the gravel track.

(9) Turn right along the high-voltage power line. At the junction, take the track on the left (Lionne). At the end, turn left onto the tarmac road to Mouréou

(10) Cross the D117E2 with care (traffic coming from the motorway), and take the stony track opposite (Bois du Basta) until you reach a tarmac road.

(11) Turn right onto this road and pass the private property known as Béousse.

(12) Pass the Château Navarot estate and then, at the hamlet of Le Sable (or Le Sabla), take the road on the left. Pass the hamlet of Le Peyrey. At the hamlet of Le Caméou, leave the well on your right and take the path that goes round the houses and heads towards the vineyards.

(13) Continue along the path and cross the D17 (local traffic), then take the path opposite until you reach the D11.

(14) Cross carefully (traffic coming from the motorway) and take the path opposite, slightly to the right, between the vineyards. At a small copse, take a hairpin bend. When you reach a woodland, turn right and continue between the woodland and the vineyards,

(15) Pass a detached building (Boisson) and continue straight ahead along the path between the vineyards until you reach a tarmac road, at the bend in the road. Turn left, going round a hut overgrown with vegetation.

(16) Turn right onto Rue de Brouquet and enter the town of Podensac. Continue along Rue de Brouquet, ignoring the railway area on the right, then turn right onto Cours Georges Clémenceau (D117E1 towards Saint-Michel-de-Rieufret).

(17) At the level crossing, cross the railway line with care (Bordeaux-Toulouse TGV line). Take thefirst street on the left (Rue Bernajot). At the corner by the gendarmerie, turn right onto Cours du Maréchal Foch (D1113, Route de Toulouse). Cross the D1113 (Route de Toulouse) with care and take Rue du Général Saint-Marc opposite. Turn left into Rue Sabin Darlan, then right onto the tree-lined Allées Georges Montel and continue to Rue des Fontaines (S/E).

Notes

Route designed in 2022 and walked in April 2023
Very slight elevation gain (30 m); the main difficulty lies in the nature of the ground, which can become sticky or slippery if it has rained in the preceding days.
Please ignore any old green and/or yellow markers you may come across.

A very interesting route as we have a view of the other bank of the Garonne where we can see Cadillac and its castle,
with few roads and paths in good condition.
Given the weather and the season, we didn't meet anyone, but in spring and summer this route must be very popular.

This varied route can be enhanced by a visit to the large, wooded park located very close to the starting point.
There are numerous statues and a beautiful building

Hello everyone. We had a brilliant hike, which the two of us completed in four and a half hours. Take care during the hunting season. Make sure you’re visible and make a bit of noise. It’s an easy route, suitable for everyone, provided you take a few breaks.
