Towards the heights of Pardailhan from Beaucaire

A very pleasant walk thanks to the many paths winding through hedgerows or groves, offering numerous views of the surrounding countryside. A stop is a must at the ruins of Pardailhan Castle.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the Beaucaire canoe centre, take Rue du Vieux Port, cross the D939 ( caution: danger ) and continue straight on along Route de L'Espitales until you reach a three-way junction.

(1) Turn right onto the stone path and continue until you reach the vineyards. Go round the vineyards on the right then on the left and follow the path that runs alongside the Ruisseau La Bèze, then crosses it via a small bridge. Continue to the tarmac road, Route de Pardailhan.

(2) Turn right and, after about 80 m, take the path on the left, cross a tarmac road, go round the Toulan farm and arrive on the Route d’Ampeils.

(3) Turn left and continue to the junction with the Chemin du Birgou.

(4) Turn left onto this track and, at the hamlet of Le Birgou, continue along the path. Walk alongside a vineyard until you reach the tarmac road, then turn left, continuing alongside the vineyard until you reach Chemin de Laquan.

(5) Turn left; at the hamlet of Le Béziat, take the path on the right and follow it to the Puységur junction.

(6) Take the Route de Couté opposite for about 400 m, then turn left, walk alongside the vineyards and follow the path into the Bois de Pardeillan. Walk along the edge of the woods to reach the Foute de Pardailhan.

(7) Turn right for about ten metres, then turn left to walk alongside the vineyards again. Stay on this path, which crosses a copse and runs alongside a stream before climbing up towards the Le Merlat farm. The path goes round the horse farm and returns towards the Route de Pardailhan

(8) On this road, turn right, cross the hamlet of Pardailhan and continue to the hamlet of Bidalot.

(9) At the junction, head straight ahead, pass the ruins of Pardailhan Castle and carry on to the hamlet of Matalin where the road takes a right-angle bend.

(10) At the bend, take the path straight ahead which crosses the meadow downhill to join the Route de la Bèze. Turn right and continue towards the bridge over the Ruisseau de Mardan.

(11) Just before the bridge, turn left and follow the path that runs alongside the stream and then crosses it. The path turns right then left before heading back up through the woods. On leaving the woods, turn right, walk alongside the woods and follow the track that passes through a hedge, then go round a house on the left and join a stone path. Follow this path to the junction and turn right onto Chemin du Picart. Stay on this path until you reach the T-junction.

(12) At the junction, turn right and continue along this tarmac road until you reach the edge of a woodland on the left.

(13) Take the path on the left which runs alongside the woodland and then crosses through it, following the path carefully. On leaving the woodland, head straight down between two fields to the D939. Cross the road – take care, danger.

(14) Turn right, follow the departmental road for a short distance before turning left and following the country lane that runs alongside the River Baïse through the Plaine de Sabazan to the village of Beaucaire. Arrive back at the starting point at the canoe centre (S/E).

A very pleasant walk through the beautiful Gers region, often passing close to the vineyards where Armagnac is produced, mostly in open countryside, occasionally through woodland, with very few sections on the few tarmac roads, and some views of lovely (old) farmhouses. Well done to the route planner.

A superb route, alternating between woodland and vineyard paths.
Very little tarmac.
We completed this route in 4 hours and 15 minutes, not including our lunch stop.
